Is the starter motor cranking the engine over at a reasonable speed or is it labouring? If it cranks over ok but takes a while to start it could be that some of the  glowplugs aren't working.  Does it make a difference starting when the engine is warm?

Do we know if Rob has a diesel or petrol? If the latter then he won't have glowplugs to worry about.
If starter is cranking ok but engine not firing, then I would look for some other electrical or maybe fuel issue.
Does this happen all the time, or only when cold?
