Hi all,
This is my first post - go easy on me! Got my i30 turbo GDI last week.
In the boot theres a polystyrene thing to hold all the spare tyre bits in inside the tyre and also a polystyrene organiser above that.
Been driving around and have noticed a noise coming from the back which sounds like a rubbing polystyrene noise.
Anybody else had problems with this? Is there any way to stop the noise?

EDIT: the noise is definitely coming from the boot area...it sounds like the polystyrene but if theres anything else it could be I'm open to suggestions!!

I've had those Polystyrene inserts in a lot of cars including my current model SR. Can't say I've ever noticed a noise generated by them (or had anyone else on here complain)
Not saying I don't believe you though! My first suggestion would be to get half metre or so of fine felt type material and drape it over the spare before lowering the insert into the wheel, assuming there would be enough clearance to do that then trim the excess off level with the top of the rim (with scissors not a stanley knife!)
If there isn't enough space to do that you could run a strip of gaffer tape around the outside edge of the insert and stick a few squares on the bottom on contact points...
I've always been an inventive little critter it offsets some of my other less redeeming qualities. :evil:

Firstly i would try removing things until your noise is gone. That way you can identify exactly what it is. Then you can apply padding as Dazz said.

:wts: Once you eliminate the noise by removing the right bit, you won't need as big a piece of felt. :winker:

No noise from mine.
Few ideas,
Check the rear parcel self when in place with rear hatch closed whether any possible movement against the rear seats and or rear hatch body which would vibrate during movement and cause similar type noise.
This leads into the next thing to check......
Try removing parcel shelf and see if it stops.
Check self and side bars for small rubber things that "wedge/hold" shelf to prevent vibration.
Check the spare/spacesaver is bolted down so no movement so vibrating on tool holder.
Check that the boot floor on top of the spare is seated flat with no wobble /movement.
Check the rear seats are set in their locking holders.

Unlike Dazz I definitely believe you, I had the same issue with my current car (not a Hyundai) which did not come with a spare wheel. My solution was to buy a spare wheel on Flea Bay and put the giant polystyrene block in the garage, it never squeaks in there. My beloved Hyundai had a proper spare wheel therefore no problems.

Hi all!
So I took out all the polystyrene bits, the parcel shelf, even put the seats down and back up again (tried to wiggle them around after too there is no movement at all), tried my hardest to wiggle the spare tyre around but again no movement.
Still she squeaks!!!
Tried moving any form of plastic in the boot and the outside but nothing makes the sound.
I honestly have no idea what it is but it's really annoying me. I think I'm going to speak to the dealership about it tomorrow and see what they can do.

I had a Nissan years ago that had a 'Mr Sqeaky' lurking in the back somewhere.
I had my partner at the time (a rather small lady) sit in the back section whilst I drove slowly.
She found Mr Squeaky...we exorcised him...and he never returned.

See I was right @asathorny :lol:
@kateaew It could be the hatch itself moving slightly over bumps and stuff if the rubber stops aren't adjusted right. This happened occasionally on the 1st series (FD) version.
I just checked mine and they are adjustable although no squeaking in the back of mine.

So what was he in your case? Don't leave us in suspenders...

It was some polystyrene on the top of the space saver wheel that was not centred and tightened properly.
It didn't take much to cause the squeak...and (once the demon was pin-pointed) get rid of it....in my case, anyway.

As you appear to have been unable to find inside the boot area here is a long shot to consider.......
If i recall the suspension set up has a plastic cover which is in the centre of the spring and covers the shockies.
Now there has been reports of the plastic cover being loose and rattling.
Wonder if this is the culprit.
Also, is the exhaust fittings ok.

Hi!
Yes. So I twisted the rubber things in the hatch and made them longer and it quietened down the squeaking. But it was still there. I then realised the dealership had put on these VERY ill fitting boot protectors (plastic bits to go on the lip below the boot to stop scratches when you put stuff in there). I got the dealership to come and take them off and VOILA! squeaking stops.
I guess it was them rubbing against the hatch!!

Haha! I do have a few things in mind for it. Windows tinted and red brake calipers! Can't wait for summer drives so can get some great pics of her!
