My i30 was running a bit rough a few weeks ago and was due a service, so I had a full service done. But it's still running rough. More vibration coming through the car than normal when idling and slightly jumpy acceleration, almost like misfiring. Thought it was the plugs before but just had new ones in. Exhaust sounds like it might be blowing a bit from the back but my mate has listened as well and he seems to think it's coming more from the front end. Could a leaky exhaust cause this kind of problem or is it more likely engine related? Thanks

To rule out a leak on the exhaust then put a rolled up rag on the end of the exhaust pipe to reduce exhaust escaping.
Then listen to hear if there is exhaust escaping from elseswhere.

Only do this while idling and for a very short time.

If that is not the case then why not take it back to the service centre and tell them it is not right.

Just a thought.... was it serviced at a hy dealer/service centre.

If not, then may be they have not checked the ecu settings are correct

No it was serviced by a general service and repairs centre who I have used with previous cars, not a specialist centre. I'll give the rag idea a try then and if not take it back

I doubt the exhaust would make it run rough... might be a poor batch of fuel or something. You could reset the ECU by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for at least 30 minutes just to rule that out too. Run the fuel down as much as you can and then try a tank of premium unleaded maybe (or put a bit of quality fuel injector cleaner through following the instructions on the container)

Okay then thanks, I'll give that a try as well. Could I use something like Redex? I've got some of that in my garage that I occasionally use on my old VW

Not familiar with that. If its been lying around for a while I'd get something fresh from supercheap or autobarn it's not very expensive. http://search.supercheapauto.com.au/search?w=petrol%20injector%20cleaner

Redex is actually an upper cylinder lubricant. It won't hurt and does help to protect valve seats, rings and bores if used continually. It is not really a cleaner though. Don't know how good it is, but "Spitfire" is used here in Oz to clean injectors.

NF products are the best fuel additive - octane booster - upper cylinder lubricant/cleaner I've ever used, you'd probably only require the NF 7 in one service bottle :link: NF 7 in One Service Bottle

I run NF Super Street through mine once every 3 months :link: Nitrous Formula Octane Boosters to keep things like new, occasionally I might lash out and run several tanks of NF Race :link: Nitrous Formula Octane Boosters my old Clubsport and Mini loved this stuff...at night time you can see the flames out the exhaust at high rpm :D

Nah, wont hurt titanium ceramic coated valves :D and the treatment has a valve cleaner and protectant in it :goodjob2:

The flames are also due to NF containing a small amount of nitrous/methanol, hence the name NF - Nitrous Formula.

Did they check or replace the ignition leads in the service?

Thanks for the replies guys. I've ordered some fuel additive so we'll see if that does the trick. Filled up with a tank of Shell V Power yesterday so will see if that makes a difference. I know they changed the spark plugs. No ignition leads on the invoice though

Might be worth inspecting the leads for cracks etc.. If the better Fuel/additive doesn't help.

@OP, any chance you can get hold of a OBDII adapter and scan your car for any stored fault codes?

It could give you a rough approximation of where to start looking as modern cars usually have many sensors to aid in detecting problems that could elude a person  :goodjob2:
