An interesting introductory post 

I see you have the Diesel can you tell us more? What year, what mileage, has it had a recent service or new fuel filter maybe? Does it do this when cold or when warmed up. Will it rev past 3000RPM?

its a 2010 1.6 crdi edition model had it just over a year with 26k on clock runs lovely never had any issues filled up with diesel yesterday got in it today very cold minus 1 degree drove off as usual did about half a mile thru my village then got on main road put my foot down and lost power after a few seconds and engine cut out pulled in to siding and restarted pulled away ok then same thing engine cut out limped home stripped off fuel filter and emptied it refitted it and started her up again not had any problems since but could not see anything out of the ordinary in the fuel i emptied from the filter nice and clean but it felt like water in the fuel or maybe something to do with egr valve any ideas

Certainly sounds like a fuel system issue Your are obviously quite handy, just slipping home and whipping the fuel filter out... I couldn't do that 

Bit of a worry as the injectors are worth a fortune

How far away are you from a service, it does sound like a fuel issue and glad to see you've solved it, hopefully. Interesting you say you filled up only yesterday. 
Hope there are no more repetitions.

Sounds similar to the video I posted, which was recorded by one of our owners here. The engine sound disappeared at 0:50 while accelerating, then he said "fxxk".
