No one lives remotely close to that location. It is considered to be in "The Outback" and is in a desert. It does have Opal there and this draws characters of various repute from worldwide to escape other people and work in solitude, hoping for that special piece of colour. It is very hot and you wouldn't know the place was there, except for a wind turbine, the main street and the cemetery named appropriately, Boot Hill.

The earth cools the dugouts and they are quite comfy. I've stayed there many years ago whilst working, but never in a dugout. Not the friendliest bunch of people if you're a stranger.  :(

Closest members would be in Adelaide about 5 hours drive away.

I have been quite close to there before but have never stopped off to have a good look around.
I'd like to though.

Pretty sure we stopped there when travelling as a kid. Don't remember much though.

But you did wonder where you got your opal from.   :D

Dunno bout that but I do remember finding a rock in a walkway with opal traces in lightning ridge. Most likely planted by tour guide but still exciting to me.
Trying to remember the name of the town in QLD with underground houses but can't remember. Had white in the name I'm sure.

Whitecliffs. It was Whitecliffs, took a tour through some guys underground house and he had picks and a jackhammer setup for people to try. Not a bad idea, get people to pay for the tour and do your extensions for you too :)
