Title: New forum theme for members to try
Post by: Shambles on October 19, 2021, 18:05:24
Hi

In trying to keep up with the rest of the interweb, we now have a highly-responsive theme which you can select via your profile (or temporarily via the theme switcher at the lower right hand side of every page).

Sunrise, as well as being adaptive to your screen size, includes a switch that allows you to move from Sunrise to Sunset with the click of a button. Hopefully that should satisfy those who prefer a darker appearance.

This new theme means that anyone using Tapatalk should be able to get the same level of usability with Sunrise, using a standard browser.

Don't forget to click the "Change Profile" button at the bottom of the page - that's what saves your selection.

The pull down menu right? It will change to Curve theme and Blackbox fine, but when i click on Sunrise it drops to Blackbox instead.

Doesn't work for me either, when I change it to Sunrise it'll go back to Blackbox before I can click Change Profile.

I quite like the Blackbox anyway as I find this theme less straining on my eye's :goodjob2:

Similar theme to what I'm used to over on the Avast forum, though this is better being I'm able to turn off the lights :goodjob2:

Changed the theme via my profile, signed out and back in again and it's switched back to Blackbox

Did you save your profile change?

Did you save your profile change?
Yep, tried it twice and it reverts to Blackbox on next sign in.

Also a lot of free screen space on a 1920 x 1080 screen

I can extend the theme slightly but can't replicate your login/logout issue.

There's another issue which you'll notice when you click on my screen shot, the pic enlarges as it's supposed to but you cant get out of it.

Clicking your pic took me to imgur - clicking my back button returned me here.

Clicking your pic took me to imgur - clicking my back button returned me here.
It just enlarges for me and wont revert like it should/does on the Blackbox theme.

The Sunrise isn't working at all now, I cant choose it.

can't replicate your login/logout issue.
Did you clear cookies before signing back in? mine clears all cookies automatically every time the browsers closed.

Logged out. Cleared ALL data (Firefox). Logged back in and still have Sunrise as my default theme.

Looks like it's BlackBox all the way for you, Craig :P

It'll have to be because the Sunrise theme isn't working at all now, click on Sunrise and I just get Blackbox

There's a field in the database that was completely empty earlier - I populated it to get this thing going.

It's now cleared out again, so I need to do some digging.

I've identified the switch error and corrected it (sent the theme author the fix, too ;))

It's worth keeping this theme as it fits neatly on a phone/tablet.

I'll get to the other issues shortly...

Yes it's certainly wide enough now, I'll see how future posts look as the previous post text is to the left of the screen.  (edit) Text is all good now too, Thanks Steve :goodjob2:

Picture is working correctly too :goodjob2: the only issue that remains for me is it reverting back to the blackbox theme whenever I logout.

Just tried it on my iPhone and it does the same revert back to Blackbox theme, the iPhone doesn’t logout though, I just close the browser and reopen for it to revert back.

The sunrise theme does look good on the phone, shame it won’t stick :(

the only issue that remains for me is it reverting back to the blackbox theme whenever I logout.

Just to be clear - if you then re-login does SunRise reappear as your theme? The forum default for guests is BlackBox.

After login it’s still Blackbox and I’ve got to choose Sunrise every time if I want it, once logged in it remembers that I changed to dark mode.

I’ve also tested with AdGuard off on both devices just to make sure it wasn’t blocking anything, no different.

The board doesn't remember if I choose the Curve theme either, always back to Blackbox

Looking further into the theme code, the switch for dark/light is indeed being held in a local cookie, which is annoying. If I can get the other issue sorted I'll change the theme code.

The theme selection is stored in your profile so should persist between logouts. Mine certainly does, even with cleared out cookies.

Just to confirm @CraigB you are setting the switch permanently via your Modify Profile >> Look & Layout  ?

Not in Look & Layout, doing it via Profile/Forum Profile, choosing the Sunrise option down the bottom right then clicking Change Profile, the green bar appears saying my profile has been changed successfully but on sign out and back in it's back to Blackbox.

Bit you should be in Look and Layout to be able to save it permanently.

That's your answer then :P

The dropdown switcher is a 'this session only' setting. It won't persist across logins.

That may well be its strong suit. In my case, with a government secure phone, it's not something I use.

So, I got out after two weeks in the dock, on a f&&&ing covid ward.  For anyone who doesn't understand the implications of being on a covid ward that means essentially confined to a room, not allowed out and quacks and nursy people virtually coming in wearing HAZMAT suits AAAaaRRRGGGHHH.  I signed in and thought, oh no I've come to the wrong URL <sigh`> Dementia day, but oh no, Steve has had is decorating kit on and painted the walls and such :-).   Well done Steve, I like it.

It's on the bottom of a page of a topic, not every page.

So, if (eg) you've clicked the 'new' icon to read this, the button will be below this reply :)

Is it preferred to eliminate the Blackbox theme altogether? I thought it was just a matter of more choice. If it needs to go, who am I to stand in the way of progress?

Thing is, Herr Gonz, our overlord - Monsieur Google - deems our BlackBox theme as unresponsive and not conducive to viewports that require support for mobile devices, hence our degradation in google's rankings. Also hence, the 'ailing' descriptor.

Since the default theme is now a highly responsive Sunrise, members can choose BlackBox as their default theme if they so desire :D, but they (you?)  will miss out on certain features only available during the SunRise viewport which I may be unable to port to BlackBox  ;)

I have capitulated and changed to sunrise. I guess Steve has been got at by the woke brigade and trying to avoid the term "black" at all costs.

In so doing has he fallen into a trap set by the Wokists? and will now stand accused of choosing a white theme.   :crazy1: :snigger: :snigger:

Another fix I needed to make was repairing the erroneous parsing and truncation of this:

Frugal Firty: FDSLXCRDi5spHyperSilverBodyKit+Mods &ampampampampamp MrsG'#039#039#039#

back to this:

Frugal Firty: FDSLXCRDi5spHyperSilverBodyKit+Mods & MrsG's PDSRPremAuto

... and it only gets worse with every attempted fix, and probably every new post!

What I don't understand is that the font size is much smaller in SunRise than in BlackBox. I have to zoom my Chrome browser to 125% to be able to read it comfortably.

Specifically - on my Chrome browser it is set at 110%  by default for all web sites .  For sunrise I have to change it to 125% to get a similar font size .

It's not a big problem  - just curious.

Hmmm?
I hadn't noticed a change in font size.
But I have to admit the way I had to scroll across the page to see all the post (and photos) in black box probably meant I was less concerned about the size per se.
