Drove my car yesterday without issues, today damn thing doesn't want to start.  Had RACV come out and check things and he seems to think that the engine is flooded.  How?  Who knows why.

And I'm not out of fuel...still have half a tank left.

Luckily I'm still under warranty, so tomorrow morning I need to call Hyundai and see if they can get me in, then call RACV to get them to tow my car to the dealership.

Anyone else encounter this problem?

It should be fixed under warranty, right?  I don't need a huge expense like this now.

I thought that flooding was more pertinant to PETROL engines....

Good luck

Never heard of that in fuel injected vehicle. How was "flooding" determined as the cause

I would be more inclined to think that no glow plugs are working, therefore no start and the presence of fuel.

good point Asa.  :goodjob2: :goodjob:  but if the glow plugs aren't working it will flood as you turn the engine over to start it. the fuel pump on a diesel only turn over delivering fuel while the engine is turning over unlike a petrol engine that uses an electric fuel pump.  :winker: comaterpillar may have an idea, hes a diesel mechanic.  :goodjob2: :goodjob:

If it was flooded and left a while, it would start.
Unless it looks like this, then he might be right.

As you say, it's under water warranty so should all be good.

Left the car for 2 hours and still nothing, plus the battery is now dead due to constantly trying to turn the engine over.

Yeah, RACV mentioned something about glow plugs, how the whole thing has to be dismantled, drained, dried and replaced.

I'm thinking a blown glow plug fuse/relay.

you should be able to replace the fuse/relay and just start it up. its going too blow a massive amount of smoke for a minute or two.     if it was heavily flooded the engine would hydraulic lock due too the large amount of diesel in the bores. IMO.

Fuel filter, clogged/water ..... has this been ruled out?

re water, that should indicate on the dash.

re hydraulicing, a very real possibility, avoid at all costs. Do not crank the engine any more. Let the workshop handle it from  here.

I called Hyundai first thing this morning and explained the situation.  Said he can't guarantee that it would be looked at today due to a full workshop.  Already told him I'm missing a day of work due to this (I'm not though, as I work from home) and also there are no loan cars available.

Called for a tow truck to take it to Hyundai and he was here within half an hour of calling.

I'm just hoping this isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg.

Nope, only one in Geelong.  Werribee is up the highway but is even more of an inconvenience.

So Hyundai just called to inform me that my car has been fixed.  The engine was not flooded.  The cause was a rat had chewed through the cam position sensor.

Who'd have thunk?

$108.

Bloody Rat....

$108 seems very reasonable for Hyundai.

Should consider yourself very lucky.

Ask for the rat back, or what's left of it.

Rat stew could offset some of that $108 ;)
