Just for a bit of interest. I've taken a few oil samples from the sump to compare with increased kms. New oil vs. used. I'll take more photos as the kms continue to rise over time.

Another great idea... :D I remember our CRDi used to blacken up the oil much quicker than the 2.0 ltr Petrol CW does..

I am surprised my Camry Hybrid with stop start technology doesn't dirty the oil more quickly but still not bad after 10,000kms since the last service

      Caloundra, Queensland.
Top idea. Why didn't I ever think of that.
I've done it with brake fluid in the past but engine oil?  Well done Steve.

The oil gets dirty quickly due to the crdi has a EGR, which recirculates exhaust gases back into the inlet manifold { black sooty crap}, google blocked EGR, very interesting reading.
I have blocked the EGR in another crdi car i have & the oil stays clean for each 10k service, the oil stay cleaner & the whole engine runs cooler, if i could find the EGR on the i30 , i would'nt hesitate to block it.
Cheers Bloodnut :winker:

I've just updated this, 1875 kms since oil change now.
Visibly darker but I guess in keeping with what's expected.

Guys the reason for the discolouration of the oil is simply that diesel engines produce carbon soot, and is the reason that all diesel engines blow a little smoke on start up. the soot is cleaned from the exposed underside of the bore when a piston is at top dead centre of its stroke by the oil ( exactly what the oil is designed to do clean ) removing the carbon soot. with a petrol engine there is a lot less carbon soot unless there is another issue, hope this has helped to explain it a little.

Cheers Q

Oops it's been a while.
Just added an oil colour photo after 8222 kms. Another couple of thousand km's and it will be like Coopers Stout.

That's pretty  :cool!:
I'm getting everything except the oil colour pics - when i click on that it's just blank. Is there supposed to be something in that one too?

I just had a browse through your website - very interesting especially this one which brought back memories of my youthful endeavours to motorise my life.
