Recently purchased a Hyundai i30, 2009 model, petrol 2.0L automatic.

It has been a great little car, a great replacement of my Ford Laser 1985, that was well on his way out !!

I have had a few issues with my Hyundai, and have not yet taken it to the dealer. It only has 65,000km, it was an ex-government car.

The "ESP OFF" light has been coming on the dash every so often, and it won't go away until the car is switched off & restarted. The wheel-alignment was a bit off, it dragged to the left, so I had that fixed up - and have not seen that light come on since (TOUCH WOOD).

However this is a strange noise coming from in the steering wheel, that does not occur all the time. There are no set conditions under which it occurs, just suddenly, sticks around for a while, and then goes. I am not sure if this is anything to worry about, or has any one else experienced anything similar ??? I have attached a video of the noise, if anyone would care to have a listen!

Please help, I hope my car is ok !

Re the steering wheel rattle:
Have you tried adjusting the steering wheel for reach or moved it up and down to see if that has any effect?  :undecided:

Oh, welcome to the forum, by the way.....  :goodjob:

Hey Rustynutz.

Yeah I have adjusted the steering wheel for reach, and moved it up or down (while the noise is occurring) - and it has done nothing to effect. Sometimes when you push into the steering wheel it stops, but I tried doing that today and that had no effect - the noise did not change for anything !!

ok, back to the drawing board then.... :undecided:

It does sound like it might be something thin buzzing against plastic...... :undecided:

Probably be worth taking it back to Hyundai to see what they reckon before we start pulling your car to pieces...

Sorry I'm not much help.....  :-[

Just had a thought, have you tried tightening the screws that hold the steering wheel airbag cover on?  :undecided:

Welcome to the forum :)

That is indeed a strange sound.

Does it stop when you move your indicator/multifunction stalk? I've a spooky feeling that  the clockspring might come into this conversation at some point (hope not).

Interesting about the ESP light. I've had that  happen 3 times. As you say goes away on restart. I'm not worried about it at this stage. I guess it's some small glitch which would be hard to pin down although I might hook our scan guage up to it sometime I'm at work.

I have fiddled with a few controllers, but nothing appeared to change the noise. What is this clockspring ?? When it comes to cars, I have no idea. Would the clockspring thing cause it to be sporadic ??

Don't think I am going to go fiddling with screws, I flicked Hyundai an email. Will see what they say, and no doubt drop in to the local Hyundai dealer. Still under warranty for another year, I think.

Welcome to Club.. My wife (Trish CW) and I are both Members, so we both had a listen

We wonder if it might not be in the steering? My first thought was a noisy speedo cable (Not sure if that is possible these days but I had a similar noise in a previous car and that is what it was)  :winker:

IF it happens when you are not moving then forget that idea  :snigger:

It does happen when I am driving, and it usually occurs on a straight bit of road. Generally free-way driving, but today I heard it after coming along a windy road.

To me it sounds as if 2 things are rubbing together due to the vibration from the movement of the car.

Now is it from below your knee i.e. behind the dash or even in the engine area or from the suspension.

or is it the cover around the indicators which is vibrating...

I think we could rule out speedo cable.  Doesn't have one.

the esp off light is due too a faulty brake light switch, the wife's cw is on its 3rd one.   the noise in the steering could be the plastic covers that wrap around the steering column.

Dropped the car off to Hyundai this morning, the man was quiet rude. He asked where it was coming from etc. and I told him, and played him the clip. He wrote something down, it had belt in it. Anyway, he said he would call me at around 3.

Now we just wait !!

So according to the guys at the Hyundai dealership it was 'old and cracked' belts. So they have been replaced, unfortunately not covered under warranty. I am yet to be convinced, as I think I heard the sound again this afternoon but by the time I turned down the radio to listen it was gone !!

So am going to take it for a long spin tomorrow, and see how we go !

Do you know the damage money wise yet? (pity they are not covered by warranty) did you ask for the old ones back  :whistler:

Maybe I am being unfair but sounds odd to me

My dad told me to ask for them back, I did forget. It cost me $130 including the labour. On the receipt it says Belt "V" and another one, Belt 885. I think they said on the phone something to do with the drive belt and AC.

Guess we will find out tomorrow when I take it for a proper spin. If this is not the fix, I will be really pissed off if I am asked to pay more !

You should give her socks at the same time then.
They quiten things down.

I don't think that will work, Dave. I brought her a matching belt and bag set not long ago and she's still complaining that the vacuum cleaner isn't working properly.
