Hey all

Bought my i30 with 90,000ks from well known dealer. Have found a couple of issues with the gearbox and steering

1. After driving, then putting into reverse you get a harsh thump into gear.

2. When revving from 2nd to 3rd gear, sounds like gearbox slip when changing gear and free revs for 2-3 seconds

3. When coming to a stop relatively quickly when gearbox down shifts, its thumps hard from 2nd to 1st. Similar feeling to problem 1

4. When driving through short, sharp bumps there is rattles from steering

5. When slightly turning wheel right, you can hear a clunking noise from right steering boot of rack.

Now other than these issues, it is a great car. Anyone hear of these or similar problems??

Cheers Frank

Howdy Frank :)

Didn't those issues show up on your test drive?

Hi Frank and Welcome.

The steering knock is  a known issue and the gearbox clunks don't sound right either.. I would be going back to the dealer ASAP and trying to get both sorted before you run out of the 5 Year warranty  :sweating:

Greetings Frank.

If you've just purchased the car, then the vendor should cover some of the cost of repairs under their warranty. In presume the factory warranty has run out.

Does the vehicle have a full service history? The clunking from the right boot sounds like a cv joint, but the kms are a bit low for this.

The trans doesn't sound too good either. There is a valve controller that handles most of the things you are writing about, Sounds like it is in need of servicing or repair.l  :'(

Welcome crankyfrank118

Is it still under warranty?  If so then a Hy dealer should be contacted.

If not, do you have a "Sale of Goods" Act which basically means the seller has to ensure the goods are fit for purpose and has to rectify any problems?

If so I'd be asking them to sort out the issues.

Thanks all

There were no signs of this on the test drive obviously. I believe it has a 5 year wty from hyundai. Car was sold early 08 so still in that. plus the dealer i bought it from gives 5 year warranty on top! Whether the problems are covered or not is another thing....
