Same thing with my car.  I took it back to the garage and they put some silicone lube on the lock of the cap because they said that they couldn't do anything about the tension of the cable.  The cap opens now after I try 3 or 4 times, but it's still there.

It must be on a separate thread but someone discovered that sometimes this is easily fixed by adjusting the thin plastic cap retaining strap (which can foul the trap door) :goodjob:

Hi.
I'm not sure if this is the source of the problem (and a possible solution).
I felt this problem a few times when I needed fill petrol.
"Curiosity sharpens the wit", and today I tested this several times.
My conclusion is the following. (Right or wrong, I repeat, I'm not sure!)

If this piece (I don't know the correct name) is on the the top side, the cap opens well.

But, if the same piece is on the bottom side, the cap don't opens properly.

Please, try that, see what happens, and tell us yours feelings.
Regards,
carib

Same issue with mine, everytime.
I was thinking of just cutting off the leash.
Hate how it just dangles there against the bodywork when filling.

Doesn't your filler cap sit in its cradle in the opened flap while filling?

yeah i showed the wife you can do that last week, and she has had her car for 2 years now.  :disapp:  what are the marks on the side of your car sweet heart?  oh that's from the fuel cap touching the side of the car while I'm putting in fuel.

it's entirely possible this is a good solution for some  :)

however when i first had issues with my fuel door, it wasn't that it was too tight/jammed; it was that it kept opening on its own.  quite embarrassing when for awhile it looked like i just was forgetting to close it, but it was opening itself randomly. so that points to an actual latch fault of some sort.

after taking it to dealer i had the reverse issue of it being too tight and having to use lever a few times until it would open. back to dealer and its about right now.
i'll try to think of looking and see what orientation mine is though.

2 weeks ago I used some silikon spray (arexons) deep inside the cover, where the hinge is... supposed to be. After that, opened the fuel cap today for the first time and guess what:  :yahoo:
Tested for several times, seems ok.

P.S.: Seems a good solution 'till the next visit to your dealer, as SC says it is adjustable somehow; thanks SC :D

Yep!
Had this issue a few weeks ago as well and remembered reading the thread previously.
I used some WD-40 which is a lubrication & moisture dispersant spray on the hinge area as well as the catch and have had no issues since.  :goodjob:

Of course with our cars we so rarely have to fill up we don't have to deal with these problems too often.... :whistler:

A bit of lateral thinking... (why didn't I think of this before )

It appears that the plastic "lead" that tethers the fuel cap to the car is one of if not the main culprit with the sticking cover issue...

If it happens to Trish's car I will get permission  to cut that lead off completely (with a built in holder in the flap it is pretty much superfluous really.... :whistler:

For me - the main virtue of the plastic tether is that it physically prevents me from removing the cap - putting it on the top of the pump - filling the car - and then clicking the filler door shut without first replacing the cap.  I lost a cap on a previous car by doing exactly this. (senior moment!!!)

Fair call Alan, but with a place to put the cap I would have thought a senior moment would be less likely with the i30.. :goodjob:

The previous Audi car had a similar location inside the flap - however it is too easy to undo the cap and keep it in one hand whilst the pump nozzle is in the other - then put the cap down on the nearest horizontal surface when the pump nozzle gets "heavy" and you change hands. If I were you I would not take the risk.

i'd probably lose the cap if the lead thing wasn't there either, well i never have lost one but i've stressed about it and had to pull over and double check, so at least it keeps me from doing that

I've experienced the problem now too... Petrol Cap won;t open without prying it after pulling lever inside car....

There is now a service campaign (TF2 - #11-01-012) to "fix this problem. It involves altering the spring on the door with a rubber pad part # 69514-2L000-QQH to assist it in opening....

I haven't had it done to my i30 yet since it's  only been to the dealer twice (less than 10K miles on it in two years), but those two times have both been for warranty repairs (the radio went out 1 week after delivery and that took 3 months to get a new unit; funny since I found out they were made less that an hour from where I live, and the ESC OFF kept comping on, which was a faulty brake light switch causing the car to not know if the brakes were being pressed or not). Otherwise I really love my i30... (or elantra touring since it's in the united states.)

Hopefully with an actual repair campaign to point to, it's easier to get your dealer to fix it under warranty, as it's now a legitimate documented complaint.
