Just normal clothes, jeans, nothing abrasive....
In an Armchair Factory, the majority of returns and complaints were about "worn out fabric covering".
The common factor seemed to be jeans that were made of a hard wearing "denim", and the weakest fabric took the brunt. I am not suggesting that is the reason, just an observation.

not ever having a 3 door car, how do rubbing against door seals getting out of the back seat of one them go?

A 3-door small car served me for the last 13 years, 'till 2009. My twin 9 y.o. kids raised in that back seat.
During all these years, my wife, me and various port-bebe seats, kid-restraints, boosters etc found their way in and out the back seat thousands of times, through the co-drivers door frame. I'm 1,86 (6'1") tall.
1st point: No sign of wear to the back seats and, of course, not a scrap of wear on the door seal. And i never use armorall or anything else.

Once when the car was 6 y.o., a friend of mine (1,96m tall and over 160kgrs - well, he doesn't know exactly) was stuck in the back seat, between the door frame and the central armrest. As he was struggling to get out (with me pulling him), he broked the plastic hinges of the central armrest's cap (he door frame AND the seal remain undamaged though )
2nd point: Dealer replaced the armrest in no time AND no cost, despite it wasn't a warranty issue. Impressive, huh?

As for my i30: When my car was 6 months old, my Hyundai dealer didn't hesitate to keep my car for a good 20 days, so he can spot and fix EVERY rattle etc. i mentioned to him. And he did (see another thread).

Obviously, car companies (and of course dealers) make their choices according to the market they adress to.
Here, an average salary is 800-1000€, so most people (including me) preffer to buy reliable, low cost cars.
So usually dealers of such companies (as Hyundai, Toyota, Fiat) are trying to keep (at least the) persistent /aggressive customers happy (Merc, bmw etc., don't)
I'm pretty sure that a dealer here would replace the seal without a second thought. Competition is hard and customers are harder to find...

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions for you rustynutz, just replying to snowcherry's couple of thoughts. At least to one of them...

EDIT: I didn't mentioned the brand of my 3-door old car. Did this on purpose...

You got me wondering what it was now. Can't have been a Fiat as that wouldn't have lasted 13 years.

You won't get banned I'm sure.  :D

My door seal has a small hole in it also - again probably from my bum rubbing against it, as my seat is fully back. I never even thought about asking for it as a warranty item!! I'll enquire next time I have a service, thanks!

I have been having fun trying to get the Hybrid down from 6.2 average to 6.0 (currently 6.1) but it involves driving like a VOLVO driver...   Never had so much fun driving slowly   (the trick is to try and stay on the electric  motor as much as possible..)
