I will add credence to your statement, over the few months leading up to Christmas I had FOUR punctures (paranoia ran rampant).

On one occasion I was obliged to call the RAC to do the wheel change.   I had to sign my life away that I would not exceed 50MPH and would get it change for a REAL wheel ASAP. 

So, the real wheels is the thing to have

Weight maybe, Phil. But check out the price of a replacement space saver tyre. Even at OE prices, the relative lack of numbers manufactured plus the need for them to be strengthened to do the job, they're expensive.

I may be wrong on both counts. Our full size spare on an alloy, doesn't weigh that much.

I replaced the space saver in my Impreza with an alloy wheel and the difference wasn't noticeable either, although I never actually weighed them.
I can tell you that in the tyre industry we never really got a logical reason for the space savers.

I always assumed that the manufacturers cut every ounce they could from the standard spec so that the CO2 emissions would be lower. In many countries this results in lower taxes being paid per year - which of course could affect sales.

I dunno if I could have asked for a full size spare when I bought the car - never occurred to me at the time - though have had no reason to use the skinny one yet.

When I sold/replaced my wheels recently I managed to get a brand new OEM black wheel from Hyundai for $80, they had 9 or so wheels in stock and said they're usually $300 but because we have lots he'll give me one for a hundred then I said how about $80 and they said no problem

The standard steel OEM wheels are much lighter than the alloys ( nearly half the weight ) which is why I wanted one of those for a spare

I rang a few wreckers who wanted $120 for a space saver and $160 for an standard OEM

I've got 4 standard black wheels in my shed. They're definitely heavier than my alloys.

The factory Alloys I sold to Dave were quite heavy, much more than the factory black steel rim I got from Hyundai, and the factory alloys are roughly 1.5 kg's heavier each than the OX rims I have now.

Trish got a full size Alloy spare in her Tourer, did you only get a space saver in the SE Craig?

No I had the alloy spare as well, but I sold that to Dave as a set.

I have replaced mine in my 2010 car and it lifts the boot floor about 25mm, but its ok.
In my 2013 estate model it's impossible because of the big plastic trays under the boot floor.

Btw, I have 4  brand new hyundai steel rims
£20 each but must be collected from nr brighton.

mostly true cruiser. But there's an awful lot of cars out there which can fit a full sized spare in where the space saver lives. Which is of course,  crazy.

The early build GDs that came to Australia had space saver wheels/tyres in a spare wheel well that could accommodate a full size spare.
Mine included.
I've since replaced it with a full size alloy spare (thanks Craig  ) and there's no loss of luggage space.
I believe it was merely a supply issue on the early cars.

Well it's nice to know that should the spare be required, you can proceed to travel without any speed or distance restrictions, unlike the space saver.
