Title: NEED HELP- TURBO issue
Post by: Snow Leopard on June 15, 2023, 17:29:33
Hi guys need help, my I30 1.6crdi 2017 (mk3) manual makes intermitten whining noise. I got alternator and battery checked. Turbo seems to be the problem. Turbo special place unplugged turbo hose and said the fan inside is moving which shows turbo is gone. Car already seems to have had new turbo from previous owner as looks very clean (no reciept) I did 8k since bought in few months, mostly local driving.

Another mechanic said its the actuator as not engage properly and making whining sound.

This is a short term car and can't fork out big bill (£1300) for new turbo.

I wanted some advice plz,  now sure worth replacing whole turbo or keep driving until it goes (as per 2nd mechanic view). Also what's the likely it will damage engine if I keep driving and it fails completely as heard diesel engines less likely to seize from turbo failure.

I tried uploading a video of noise but didn't work  :disapp: attached pic video. The actuator (the circle in pic) doesn't seem to move which I think should when accelerating. When unplugged turbo the noise disappeared.

I always loved hyundai, over bmw etc 😆  this has really left bad taste.... feel let down by my favourite car brand lol.

Read it yes, but I can't offer any useful advice.
I would only say if a turbo itself is blown then there is always danger of debris being ingested which would damage the engine.
If the actuator then I don't know what repair alternatives are available to you.
I suggest you wait a bit for members that have same 1.6crdi turbo diesel engine as your i30 PD.

My mobility scooter doesn't have turbo-assist, I am therefor unable to assist.  If you patient someone will be along and give you some advice, we're a friendly bunch   :goodjob: :goodjob:

As far as I know on my GD the wastegate actuator is vacuum operated, it seems on your PD they switched to an ECU controlled servo motor, maybe a diagnostic will show an error code for the actuator.
I imagine if the specialist is correct then the bearings are failing in the turbo but as you said the wastegate actuator should move when it diverts gas to the wastegate so maybe 2 problems.
It's never going to be easy to diagnose someone's car over the Internet so a decent garage you can trust would be my first option in your position.

Thanks guys. I have little update 😆

It's seems turbos was last changed 7 months ago.

Dealer told the previous owner there was Crank shaft end float high oil pressure. Whatever that means but sounds like a big job apart from turbo.

I feel turbo alone won't be any good as dpf probably also blocked as sometimes would struggle to start.
