Title: Gahhh! Fuel filter light on again
Post by: FeedTheHog on August 13, 2014, 16:51:18
Last time it happened was 10K miles ago but was intermittent and didn't affect performance. Now it has been on constant for 44 miles and is in limp mode. Will continuing to drive be likely to result in damage as I am hoping a fresh tank of fuel might sort things out, though it's near full currently? If the light manages to go out will the ECU restore normal power automatically???

How long are the fuel filter and assembly under warranty for anyways?

it seems a few people have had this issue from reading the various posts on here.

I would go to the dealer poste haste.....

It looks like it's a recent car and the warranty should still be in tact???

The fuel filter is replaced at, I think year 3 or may be 2 (the handbook details time period), so if your car falls within this period then get it checked at dealers as a warranty issue.

If over the first period then was it changed at the required service?

If the vehicle is locked in limp mode you really should avoid driving it. I'm not familiar with service schedule outside of Australia but Diesel filter would have been done at 30000km service here.
Get it inspected before it causes any further damage.

It appears you have a load of contaminated fuel. Don't blame the filter, it's doing it's job. You MUST get to the dealer and have your tank and fuel system emptied and cleaned. Do not drive the vehicle as severe damage to the engine will result. In fact, if it were mine, I'd be cleaning it right where it is.

In a Diesel engine, you can not simply run a fresh batch of fuel through it like you can with a petrol engine. Diesel's use compression to build up enough heat to ignite fuel in the combustion chamber, if water is present in the injectors & chamber, it can turn into steam, exploding the injector inside the engine and sending parts throughout the engine with expensive & disastrous consequences.

Wherever you last filled up has water in their tanks, stay away from there.

You should use a fuel additive to prevent this from happening.

Thanks for the replies.
Well, I took the car back to the independent garage where it was last serviced with genuine parts, of course. They said there was no water in the filter and even put on a new filter but the light was still on and in limp mode. Phoned local dealer straight away who said to call out their roadside assistance. AA man turned up, had a look, failed to connect his computer up or resolve the issue and said that since it still drives then I need to drive it to local dealer.
Phoned local dealer who can't fit me in until 28th August, or 4th Sept if I want a courtesy car, and they will try to figure it out. They were unable even to give it a 5 minute check. So in the meantime I need to stay employed so must drive the car at least a bit until I get to the dealer, but at least it is on their system now. Just crossing everything it's just a dodgy sensor or something inconsequential.

Borrowing my wife's new i20 for a while now, nice car.

I'd be questioning the recovery action.

When did they change recovery firms as mine is with the RAC.

Wonder if you unhook the battery lead for 1 hour and see if that clears it.

I've only ever noticed AA vans this deep in Wales, that and independents recovery guys.

Wonder if you unhook the battery lead for 1 hour and see if that clears it.
Worth a try do you think? Can't hurt anything I suppose.

I dislike intensely poor customer service!!

I once owned a V8 Commodore and was up visiting my parents in Queensland (when I lived in New South Wales).  When I was there the "Check Engine" light came on and wouldn't go off.  I was due to drive home the next day so I was a bit concerned.  I rang the local dealer to see if they could fit it in for a check.  They told me to bring it around.  The car was not under warranty at this stage.

When I got there, a technician came out and had a quick look under the hood (to check for obvious things) and grabbed the keys from me.  He asked me to give him 30 minutes.  When I got back he told me that a code had appeared for a "miscompare" in the ECU between was was expected with fuel flow and what was actually happening.  It was only just over the tolerance, which the technician said may be caused by the "extras" on the car (Cold Air Intake, better exhaust system).  He cleared the codes and the light.  I asked him what to do if the light came on again on the way home, as I had a 1000km trip the next day.  He said if it went into "limp mode" at all then to pull over.  If not, then the "check engine" light was just telling us that something unexpected was happening.

The total charge for this approximately 1 hour of the technicians time.  Zero dollars.  Needless to say the technician was the recipient of a six pack of beer and a nice email to his boss!!

Thanks for the replies all. Car went to dealer today - looks like it is a faulty sensor so one is on order. Will be delivered next week repaired possibly week after so still lacking power until the problem sorts out. Everything is being done (so far) under warranty :) But they say they have not 100% ruled out other things yet.

Just about 1,500 miles more to drive until it is fixed then...

That's much better than contaminated fuel, (sort of).  :goodjob2:

Did I ever tell you that I love bacon?

I've been waiting so long for Cambrian Hyundai to sort this issue that the car has today fixed itself. For the time being at least. I forgot how much power the car has over the last circa 2,500 miles of limp mode.

Good luck, hope the problem stay away. Cambrian Hy, need a kicking, though. Not good enough by a long shot.  :disapp: :fum:

So it's still working. Turns out it literally did give up waiting and cleared the fault itself. FWIW the fault code was P2264 which means water in the fuel filter apparently, though this was checked by both the indy and the dealer back in August and was not the issue.

Also found out there's a historical electrical fault on the car of unknown nature and unrelated to this episode. I knew nothing about it.

With any luck this is the end of it though Cambrian Hy were much more useful today. Just hoping it doesn't fault during an overtake....  :scared: :faint:

As annoying as it is, I'm glad your car  doesn't actually have a fuel quality problem as it is a very serious condition.

Good outcome. I do wonder whether an OBD dongle might just be more useful than I imagined, seeing how you learn things you don't notice!
