OK.. guys i got nothing to do so i just did some calculation on i30 SX (base model) to see if its worthed to get a diesel or petrol and worthed to get manual or auto, in Australia

i30 Full Tank = 53L

i30 Petrol
Manual : 7.2L/100km = 13.9Km/L , Full tank gives (est) = 736.7Km's

Auto: 7.6L/100km = 13.2Km/L , Full tank gives (est) = 699.6Km's

i30 CRDi
Manual: 4.7L/100km = 21.3Km/L , Full tank gives (est) = 1128.9Km's

Auto: 6.0L/100km = 16.7Km/L , Full Tank gives (est) = 885.1km's

so if we drive for 2000 km's how much money we have to spend?

If price of petrol : $1.399/L and 1 tank full = 53L

Then
i30 Petrol Manual
(2000Km/736.7Km) = 2.72 Tank x 53L/Tank = 143.9L
143.9L x $1.399/L = $201.32 / 2000km

i30 Petrol Automatic
(2000Km/699.6Km) = 2.86 Tank x 53L/Tank = 151.6L
151.6L x $1.399/L = $212.06 / 2000km

If price of Diesel : $1.609/L and 1 tank full = 53L

Then
i30 Diesel Manual
(2000Km/1128.9Km) = 1.77 Tank x 53L/Tank = 93.8L
93.8L x $1.609/L = $150.92 / 2000km

i30 Diesel Automatic
(2000Km/885.1Km) = 2.26 Tank x 53L/Tank = 119.8L
119.8L x $1.609/L = $192.75 / 2000km

So if you keep your i30 for 2 years (average of 40.000km)
40000km / 2000km = 20 tank needed to achieve 40.000 km

i30 Petrol Manual
$201.32 x 20 tank = $4026.40/40000 Km's

i30 Petrol Automatic
$212.06 x 20 tank = $4241.20/40000 Km's

i30 Diesel Manual
$150.92 x 20 tank = $3018.40/40000 Km's

i30 Diesel Automatic
$192.75 x 20 tank = $3855.00/40000 Km's

Say if the price of

i30 Petrol
Manual $18.990
Fuel cost: $4026.40/40000 Km's

Auto $20.990
Fuel cost : $4241.20/40000 Km's

i30 Diesel
Manual $ 21.490
Fuel cost : $3018.40/40000 Km's

Auto $23.490
Fuel cost: $3855.00/40000 Km's

The different between Petrol and Diesel is $2500
and the different between Manual Petrol and Diesel is approx around $1008 (if Petrol at $1.669/L and diesel at $1.609/L).
Also the different between Automatic Petrol and Diesel is approx around $386.20 (if Petrol at $1.669/L and diesel at $1.609/L).

in petrol the price different between Manual and Auto is $2000
and fuel cost different is about $214.80 (if the petrol were at $1.669/L)

as in Diesel, The price different between Automatic and Manual is 2000
and the fuel cost different is about $836.60 (if diesel were at $1.609/L)

In my opinion

if you guys wanna drive an automatic might just get Automatic petrol cost is cheaper to run and more power (in hp/kW wise) also price is cheaper, unless you want to try the hyundai turbo diesel, lazy/cant drive manual and you want to use it more than 5 years because after 6.5 years its become break even with petrol

if you guys wanna drive manual, Diesel is the answer and also after 2.5 years its break even with petrol, and also its cheap in petrol also in maintenance, but if you want a power(in hp/kW wise) get petrol.

if you guys deciding which one to choose between automatic or manual. i recommend Automatic, the reason is that you don't have to replace clutch ( price of clutch is vary between $200-1300 plus approx $500 labor and average they have to replace every 80000km's, unless you a really gentle with manual they it might be last till 130000km's). but if u wanna fuel economy stick with manual, but remember u not gonna save alot of money ( approx $200-900) ,which not worthed because some of the good clutches price is starting around $900 mark + $500 labor cost and i know most of you guys want to keep your car at optimal level. and also modern Automatic car has a clutch in it , its cover under you warranty.

Importantly Always remember 100.000km's Diesel Motor will still performing the same way as you buy them long time ago (still Strong), as in Petrol 100.000km's most of the power is reduce over the years...

so think about it before you make up ur mind between petrol or diesel, think why u need petrol and why u need diesel...

and also do u need automatic or manual

Hint: remember Fuel prices is always risen.

thank you for reading this smile.gif

Good analysis,

So its a catch 22 do we sit back and wait, I was in the market for a small hatch back and wanted it to be extremely economical as most days I travel in traffic, we had a sante fe which was averaging 19litres/100 so in my circumstance i am going to save lots.

c) $700 in insurance $58.33 per month
a) Sante Fe $336.23 fuel running cost a month based on 1100kms a month
b) I30 fuel running $83.24 cost a month based on 1100kms a month

a-b + c = 336.23-83.24+58.33 = $311.32 Savings in running costs per month
So over 12 months I will save $3735.84

I payed cash for the i30 and sante fe does not include interest repayments in this calculation so i'm better off either way.

Everyones circumstances will be different to this calculation.

Echocae,

I think i may have posted a similar comparison a while back in the fuel consumption thread, but this is now a more appropriate thread for it.

When i faced this decision, i looked at it in a slightly different way. I looked for the break even point in terms of km's driven.

Using your figures....

Car Price Difference between Petrol and Crdi: $2500

Fuel price:
Petrol: $1.399
Diesel: $1.609

Fuel Consumption (Manual):
Petrol: 7.2 L/100km
Diesel: 4.7 L/100km

Cost per 100km:
Petrol: $10.0728
Diesel: $7.5623

For each 100km, the Petrol version is $2.5105 more expensive.

Break even point for the diesel owner would be at the 99582km mark. Of course that's ignoring all other cost factors.

Using more realistic consumption figures (5.1 L/100km (diesel), and 7.8L/100km (petrol)) it works out to be 92377km.

For me, the bells and whistles of the SR (Cruise control (!!!), Amazing sound system, spectacular wheels, side skirts, and spoiler) that i will enjoy throughout those 90,000+ km make it the better option.

Yes, you can get all those add-ons after market, but it just blows out the break even point. SR wheels and side skirts alone will push the break even point up to the 200,000km mark.

There are many other factors to consider when making this decision - one I'd be interested in, is a comparison of service cost between the petrol and the diesel.

At the end of the day, (I think) it largely depends on what you intend to do with the car.

Tim.  ;)

Hi Guys,

Just putting in my 2 cents worth as usual... even if diesel stays an average of 30c per ltr higher than unleaded I imagine the extra cost in the diesel models will be partly recouped in resale value (so that needs to be taken into account) and how do you put a value on that feel good factor you get in the CRDi when cruising up hills  :D

Bye

WOW echocae - So in depth.  Are you a Hy salesperson in disguise?

Joking. I did a similar analysis when I was looking to change cars last year but didn't go into it as deep as you.

At the time unleaded petrol and diesel was the same price in the UK, give or take a few pence, and I worked out my breakeven point to be for diesel to be 2.67 years and for petrol version 2.21 years on the purchase retail price of car plus my average annual mileage.

in vietnam, diesel is still cheaper than petrol but i think will soon be equal looking at the price rising tends recently. i think in UK, not a question of price but other reason WHY buy diesel...

with echocae's post, i might have to re-think on my next car... i will work out something like echocae but more for vietnam's case...

lol NO way.. i'm a HY salesperson... i just hate filling petrol expensive petrol(98-100 octane) on my honda jazz turbo(48L =approx 200km).. so i did sum calculation of all potential fuel efficiency  car and see how much i save :P..

Today finally got the opportunity to find out how does my wife's driving style affects the fuel economy:

Before Top Up: 111km to Top Up
After Top Up: 334km to Top Up

MoGas 92 Costs per Litre: VND14,500 ($0.906)
Paid VND300,000: 20.69 Litres (1/2 Tank)

Km Gained 334-111= 223Km
Km/Litre 223/20.69= 10.778km

100Km Consume 100/10.778= 9.278 Litres!!!

Can I call that bad driving style?? Brothers feel free to correct or comment on this calculation.

Hi 30L6805 (Hope you don't mind me calling you that!)

If you're going by the trip computer K/M to empty (could be way out) while several of us have established the L/100km (average consumption reading) is quite accurate... K/m to empty rating is all over the place (see Bob's posting elsewhere on this site) The only way you can check on her accurately is the old "fill to same level at same pump trick" and divide the amount of Kms traveled by the litres put in...

That's my opinion anyway...
