Had my car services 2 weeks ago and i've noticed that the rpm at tick over when i stop, say at traffic lights and at operating temperature, drops down slowly to 700 rpm.

They stay at 700 rpm until i apply gas to move off.

Now prior to service i'm sure they never dropped below 750/800 rpm.

My handbook does not give data for rpm so my question is:

Does anyone know what the tick over should be for the gd model, 1.4 l petrol engine?

Can't help with the 1.4 petrol, but Vayda ticks over at a neat 752rpm.

My 1.6 Venga petrol ticks over at about 700 rpm sweet and smooth.

 "tick over", "gas", what language do you use over there.

Can't find the idle speed, but did find this.

1.4 Idle Speed Control.pdf - Google Drive

It would appear that the idle speed is not a fixed or tunable value.

An analogue tacho is not all that accurate, but better than nothing. I suspect, Shambles has a digital readout at his disposal. :D

We use the term 'tick-over' quite often, and I have sometimes used the 'gas' thing myself when meaning depressing the accelerator.  Though gas seems odd now I think of it - as it is really an Americanism.

I don't remember what my 1.4 petrol ticks over at, though it is an FD so differently tuned.

Cue off topic discussion on the relative merits and suitability of the terms "Gas" or "Petrol" for that stuff we use to drive our non-oiler engines.  :P

What terms do you use?

I used gas as it is a universal word which is used rather than location specific word - juice - which i would have used.

"apply gas"
= "accelerate"

Splitting hairs I know, but if you apply gas, all you are doing is raising the engine revs.
However, if you're in gear, then you apply power to the drive train and you'll move off.

Ah!
The joys of the English language.  :winker:

In the context that you used the words, tick over would be, idle.

Gas would be, power.

We do commonly have petrol engine vehicles using LPG, from Oz vast resources. No Dave's either way, really.  :D

I understand gas is short for gasoline but even the long term is not used in Au. As Phil said, we use a lot of Liquid Petroleum Gas so there's an instant source of confusion. :victory:

I'd say not.
You can generally guage how much "real" info is to be had by how quickly a post goes off-topic.  :winker:

It appears that the idle RPM is not a fixed number, so can't be provided. RPM is determined by the ISC as shown in my reply 3. The device resistance is measured and if in spec, then the engine is effectively at idle. The only way would be to accurately scangauge the motor.

Is there a member with a 1.4 & scangauge who can provide the numbers and help poor Saracen.

  • 2021 KIA Niro 3 1.6 Petrol Hybrid
My step Daughter has a 2012 i20 1.4 petrol 5 speed manual. She is not using her car at present because she is in the middle of a 6 month chemotherapy treatment. I asked my wife to check her car when she went to see her daughter this afternoon. She reports that the "Needle is a bit below the third graduation above zero". After due interrogation I worked out that this means it is idling at below 750 rpm but well above 500 rpm because each graduation is 250 rpm. This was from a cold start - the car has not moved for about 3 weeks.

Thanks for the replies.

Back at dealers in 2 weeks for my new fob so i'll ask them for details.

It runs so so smooth at at this rpm but as it is summer here just concerned come the cold weather it may be running too low and cause the car to stall.

But then i'd expect the ecu to minitor outside temp and alter accordingly.
