My brother has a GD wagon (1.6 petrol auto) and its only getting 8.6....smaller engine working harder????
I 'd say your brother must have a lead foot  my GD 1.6ltr averages 6.1 and I don't think mine being a manual would make that much difference.

I own an i30 gd2 SR manual - i drive it pretty normal, always driving in the highest gear so rev is low, accelerate when needed etc.
Avg is always been 7.2 have had in the high 6's if i drive it very conservative. On the freeway at 100 km its in the low 5's in 6th.

You will get lower fuel ecom with the manual, never been in the auto sr to comment, guessing it will rev higher
in certain parts compared to the manual.

I run it on the standard unleaded 91 octane stuff.

Whats people results off the 95 and 98 octane? more power? more km?

Where do you get your 91 octane from? Is there a mix of ethanol in there?

Normal unleaded from any petrol station is 91 here in Victoria.

Ethanol 10 % mixed is 95 octane, some petrol stations sell there here, the united etc.

fuel types.

normal unleaded - 91 octane. Used in all aussie cars
premier unleaded ( old premier ) 95 octane. used in european cars
New premier fuel like optimax - octane 98
Melb also sells octane 100 at a few servo's.

the ethanol fuels have 10 % ethanol and 90 % fuel which makes octane level 95

Remember, high octane fuel is slower burning and can put additional heat at the exhaust valves and turbo vanes. Just saying.

So should I be filling my i30 SR with 95 or 91?

Whatever your owner's manual advises.

If you use 95, it will be dearer so you would need to recoup that expense in extra kms, but some members have reported no benefits at all. There should be no damage going higher IMO, but never go under the recommended rating.

Interesting conversation. I run BP Optimum which is 98. The car seems to love it:)

My Hyundai dealer recommends using the highest octane possible and discourages the use of our 91 as it is allegedly poorest quality 91 in the world. Even though my manual states 91 is the lowest recommended, I think the Koreans don't realise how poor it is.

The Hyundai mechanic said they just had a low km i40 blow it's big end bearing and he suspects continuous knocking due to the use of 91 which caused massive wear to the point of collapse of the bearing.

My new GD 1.8 auto petrol has 10.2 l/100 today. High density city traffic driving today with expeditious launches require. 1200kn on the clock so far. Highway driving gives about 6.8 l/100. Hope it settles down a bit but I'm not too worried. This car is fun to drive!

Here in NZ,

$2.299 98oct
$2.219 91oct

That's 0.08c diff x 45l = $3.60 more to run the good stuff on a refill. I reckon it's worth it just for a clean burn and general health. I get two weeks out of a tank so $3.60/14 = 24c a day. sweet!

It's not worth it then. My manual says I can run my SR at normal unleaded 91,but preferably 95. I've only filled my tank once so far and I went with 98. I'm gonna be filling again this week so I need to decide what I'm gonna top it with

I don't think the Azzie 91 is as bad as NZ 91. At NZ0.08c more, that's about 3.8% more, so if you can achieve 4% increase in mileage! your winning and looking after your engine.

Oh and Auz fuel is much cheaper than here :)

No not cheaper, our $ is worth more, that's all.  Currently NZ$ 1 = 0.9236
