I called the local Hyundai dealer to find the cost of the 90,000 service. They want $1000.
They will take off about $200 if I supply filter kit, and oil. So that leaves $800. How do they justify that? Is $1000 the normal 90k price?
Anyway, will be going with the independent that I used for my previous car. He has quoted $200 if I supply the kit & oil.

Nev, that's bloody scandalous. :Jaw:  There's plenty of post on here about dealer service rip offs.

From memory the 90k is also the first auto service....

That being the case $200 would be a overly cheap (even supplying the auto fluid).

1k is still stupid though....

Have a look at your service guide for 90k. If you don't think it's realistic, complain to Hy head office. IMO, it has to be a joke, right.   :fum: :fum: :fum:

I think it was $450 they wanted for the 30,000 k service on my CRDi.  I didn't bother with it, happy enough to take any 'risk' myself and I got through the 5 yr warranty period with no complication from that missed service.  (I did the oil myself at 30k.)

$1000.00!

Are you sure they got the diesel bit? The petrol would be close given the timing belt and auto service....

Nope the fixed price service site has the normal mechanics listing the petrol price as between 1100 and 1200.....

Haha,
I like the animated GIF file.

The other thing I didnt mention in the original post .. it seemed a little weird when I asked the Hyundai dealer about the price, he asked for my ph no to give me a call back. He then called me back from a mobile phone almost immediately (rather than the office phone) and told me the price. Probably totally innocent, but just seemed strange.

Yes, I certainly told them it was diesel, made that clear.

$200 overly cheap? .. I supply oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and also oil ... being done at an independent. I wouldn't have thought that was stupidly cheap, but am happy to be enlightened .. what sort of price should I expect?. He quoted $280 if I don't supply oil. How much is auto trans fluid worth?

haven't read the service books yet but if it is in fact the frist time for a full service of the auto, along with the engine,I would think that is cheap, given they are doing a full strip down service of the Auto.
If your Auto stuffs up after your 90k service and it is proved not to be done correctly your up for a min $4500 to replace the Auto

Ok, now you have me paranoid..
Changing the auto trans fluid ... is this what a "full strip down service of the auto" is, or is this in addition to changing the auto trans fluid? Want to make sure the independent will be doing everything that's required.

Just out of curiousty, ring a Auto transmission service centre and ask how much it would cost for a full Auto service and adjustment, then ring Hy and ask them what they actually do for the Auto transmission service or visa versa

Going from memory and without checking, my Hyundai dealer wnated over $700 for the 90,000 km service (diesel manual) a couple of years ago now.
That's when I changed to a non-Hyundai workshop and got it done by the book for half that amount, literally.
It's a rip-off and they need to be told repeatedly IMO.

I would want something like this for my auto service at 90,000k

An Automatic Transmission service should, at minimum, include the following –

Old fluid must be drained out.
The transmission oil pan should be removed and cleaned.
The specialist will inspect the old oil and residue in the transmission oil pan for signs of metal filings or debris from the clutches which will indicate any internal damage or impending transmission problems.
The filter should be removed and cleaned. (Some transmissions have a "throw-away" filter in which case a new filter should be fitted).
The bands and controls (where applicable) must be checked and adjusted.
    The filter must be refitted.
The transmission oil pan must be refitted using a new gasket.
The transmission must be filled with new transmission fluid.
The transmission should be checked for fluid leaks.
The car should be road tested to check the transmission operation.

Looking at the Hyundai Fluid specs GENUINE DIAMOND ATF SP-III or SK ATF SP -III is specified and 6.6l is required.

Personally I will be having an automatic bloke service my auto, and my mechanic do the rest in a few weeks when I hit the magic 90k mark. It will cost a bit more (but no where near $1000) but I will get the best blokes for the respective jobs.

*edit*

ATF specs have been replaced, with those listed in the Hy Workshop Manual

When they quote for a service, exactly what would make up this figure?

For example, labor would be a major portion of it, right? What are the hourly rates, these days? If it's $100/hr, for example, then that means ten hours of solid work on the car if it's all labor.

My 15,000 km service cost me around $230. I don't know what exactly was done as they tend to not allow their customers to oversee the work.

This reminds me of a poster that we had on our workshop wall when I was an apprentice motor mech at a Holden dealer:

Hourly rates:
Normal: $20/hr
If the owner offers suggestions: $30/hr
If the owner oversees the work: $40/hr
If the owner wants to help: $100/hr

I'm glad I asked you guys. I called the independent and he said that it didn't include the auto trans service, as he said that it was unlikely to need it at 90k. He said it would be an additional $120. I will get it done of course, so it's $360 + I supply parts & oil.
I notice it has been mentioned by db08 to ensure the independent does a "by the book" service so that all requirements are covered. Can all licensed car servicers access the list of what's required? Or does the car manufacturer try to only inform the recommended dealers? Or is the service manual meant to be the only list of what's required?
I just want to make sure the independent does everything required. The service manual says "replace transaxle oil", but wasn't sure if the mechanic should know from this that this means an entire auto trans service, or whether they are meant to get this info from some other hyundai i30 service guide..?

G'day mate,

The logbook contains all the things needed for each service.

The only things a dealer has over independent is any minor service campaigns that don't hit recall status. But if your car has been serviced by Hyundai up until now, you should be up to date.

The only time my I30's see the dealer is for warranty work.

Enjoy the spending the money you save on something good!

Got a quote for an auto service today.

$185 for a service only (remove pan replace filter and gasket and refill)
$360 for a Flush service (all the above plus flushing the auto to remove the fluid from the torque converter and adjust bands).

Nope,

360 for the auto (I think that it deserves some love) $240 (inc self supplied parts) for the rest. Around $600 for me.

servicing is a very interesting field to look into.if you read your book, most what I would call majors,15000,30000,45000, so on, so on,all mention inspect brakes, exhuast, again so on,so on,now I have on two occassion sat in the wiating room and awaiting my major services to be completed, which each time has taken no more than 1hr 40 mins, now in this time how can they do everything which is in the list,I regularly rotate my tyres,I have like the dealers the capability of jacking all fours up and removing the wheels, inspect the calipers and pads, this takes me min 45- 50 mins to do it thoroughly,so to me that leaves them 45-50 mins to do the rest of the service, plus at the same time two other PPL have also been waiting for their vehicles with me,I can not see how two mechanics can do three cars properly in this time frame,I actually question they do what they say they do,but as long as they give you the list on a piece of paper with everything they have supposedly done,it cements any warranty issue you may have with them in the future,Cyril is book in for his 75000 next week with my local bloke.

Speaking of servicing has anyone been able to source a deisel serpentine belt yet under $77,mine on both Bruce and Cyril are still in good nick but I am looking for spares now.

Apparently they don't take the wheels off, they use a light and mirror to check them. Or so the bloke from Bob Jane told me when I relayed the story of someone at work, whom a dealer wanted to charge $30 to rotate the wheels during a service.

beerman if that be the case then it is bull hockey, because you can not inspect anything correctly like that, this is the method I use to regualrly inspect my serpentine belts, which is a little faster than removing it,but other than giving you a general view it is nothing like doing a proper inspection

Thats what I said.....Hence why I choose not to use the dealers all they really care about is if they can sting you for over priced brake pads rather than doing a proper inspection of the area.

My bloke rotates the wheels for free because he already has them off.

What you've said is another reason why I don't want to use my Hyundai dealer. It's not just the fact they are charging $1K, but I do not fully trust the work they do. At my previous service (75k) they chose a random spot in the service book (105k) and filled that out as completed. Also, the next service reminder sticker on the windshield said 95k (instead of 90k). I went back to them and said "I did not realise Mr Magoo works here".
Sure it's the service book and not the car ... but in my opinion if they can't get basic things right like filling out the service book properly, then what hope does my car have of being done right?
