I received this Email today. (I have smudged my Email address which was correct).

I have my reasons for thinking this might be a scam.

1. The senders address. I rather doubt that the government have sub-contracted the chore to a third party

2. I already have a Government gateway account.

3. I didn't pay any tax in 2017.

4. There is no way that the government would offer a tax refund out of the blue - you have to beg and plead for one for months

5. I'm a cynical old bastard who never responds to offers that look too good to be true.

To help our investigations, report all HMRC related phishing emails and bogus text messages to us. Even if you get the same or similar phishing email or text message often, email it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk and then delete it.

Do not open attachments or click any links in an email or text message, as they may contain malicious software or direct you to a bogus website.

Tax refund and rebate scams

HMRC will never send notifications by email about tax rebates or refunds.

T'was the first thing I did - I also reported a similar one received last week and another in July.
