Title: Rebuilding for Security
Post by: frisby1971 on November 06, 2022, 19:20:28
My dear fellow Hyundai i30 FD drivers.
I recentely did some replacements to the damping and steering parts.
When we (secondhand) bought it, it had some knocking hard noises when we drove over little bumps or little stones on the parking side. I replaced stabilize bars, ball joints and wishbones because of geared bad rubber. The noise is gone! But now I have an ESP failure constantly shown in the display. I van not switch it of with the dashboard switch. And the steering wheel is not straight anymore.
But if you let the wheel go during driving, the car goes straight and does not pull to one side.
I tried to straighten the steering wheel, but it did not work out with the joints behind the steering power and the steering pin under rather dashboard and pedals. Those are so stuck! Any one an idea or working suggestion to straighten the steering wheel?

Here some pictures of my hard work (hard, because so many bolts were rusted and almost unable to get off)

Gr. Frisby

It's probably a silly question but have you actually done a wheel alignment since you replaced all the parts?

A wheel alignment will fix the steering wheel position.

Not yet, Surferdude! That’s the first thing to do next. Thanks for the reply

Hopefully that will also fix the ESP light.

Well, the wheel alignment has been done. The i30 is straight as a nail.
The steering wheel is also correct.

I was able to switch off the ESP light with the switch on the dashboard.
I have not tried to turn it on (that the display shows “ESP off” with the slipping car in it).

In the garage where they aligned the car, they also found one stabilizer link at the backside which was worn out. Gives the ‘knock knock’ sound.
Immediately ordered two new ones to replace both sides.

Step by step the Hyundai will be better.
As my daughter and wife mainly drive this vehicle, it better be safe.

So, on the repair or to-do list:
1) replace links at the back
new oil and filter (hopefully the rattle noise above 2000rpm will go down. I think it is the time chain. The garage advised me to replace the oil every year or 15.000 km)
2) New fuel filter
3) New interior filter
As there is no history available, I replace them.

To be continued  :snigger:
