Messy oil changes could soon be a thing of the past, if a new technology from lubricant specialist Castrol takes off.

Called Nexcel, a car's new oil and filter are contained within a single box, known as a cell. A mechanic can simply unhook some pipework, lift out the cell and install a new one - in just 90 seconds

Any drawbacks? Well, at the moment the Aston Martin Vulcan is the only production car to be fitted with the system, and they cost about £1.8 million each. Castrol plans to expand the Nexcel system into mainstream cars as soon as it can.

Nice idea, but I suspect any cost saving on garage labour will be offset by the higher cost of the replacement oil/filter unit.
