Title: Octane
Post by: Pnut on June 10, 2021, 20:51:17
Sorry, I know i am probably opening myself up for a newbie question like this, but i have gotten mixed answers so far.

What octane petrol should the FD 1.6 be running?

I was driving the wifes car yesterday with the window down and noticed the engine pinking a little, so wondered if these were made for high or normal octane fuels? My wife is of Scottish and Irish heritage so of course she just puts in whatever's cheapest, over here that is 91 octane. Is that ok for these motors?

I don’t know about the FD model I’m sorry, but the owners’ manual for my GD states 91 or higher. I always use 95 though as I think the car runs smoother on that.

I have tried E10, 91, 95 and 98.  I honestly can't tell the difference in fuel use and/or perception of smoothness etc.  As a result, I have been in permanent 91 mode for the last few years.
