Other than fuel running down your paint work it wont ruin anything else ( or as Shambles said "your shoes" ) just suck the excess fuel out with a straw

So do I - right up to the point it is about to spill out of the neck. It's the only way to calculate accurate fuel economy records for each fill.

Not aware of fuel tank emission controls on Diesel cars. There's an overflow pipe and that's all AFAIK, as the fuel is not volatile like petrol, so doesn't need evaporative controls.

Petty sure the tank has a vapour emission filter? I guess if fuel runs down the vent line it could damage the filter. Its a wild guess BTW
