Yep, I had to put it off for a while when I decided to buy a new home and a new car later on, but now I think I may afford myself to set some money aside for my hobby. Moreover I want to buy a metal detector.

I hope too, thanks)

I was outside and had to get the camera and tripod out quick before this show of Aurora Borealis was over. Here at 62° latitude we see them occasionally, but in Lapland (up to 70°) they occur more often and can be much stronger and look way better. Many tourists visit Lapland every winter in hope to see this magic.

Had a hell of a last few months, I decided to change jobs to shave 20+20 minutes of my commute(amongst other things), so been very busy trying to tie up all the loose ends. Getting to the tail end now, working tomorrow, off on Friday and have my final day on Monday officially handing over the baton to the next manager.

But

Passed my MOT yesterday, only comment was "damn, brakes took good!" so good for another year. :)
I'll only be working 5-6 days for the entire 12 weeks of summer, had a lot of parental days I need to take out or else my nanny state will take them back. Tough luck. :)

As the (facelifted) MY20 Ioniq EV is soon rolling out (sept) they have lowered the prices of MY19, and my new (actually also my previous) job is in range of that one, only 55km away... Fingers are itching but wallet says to keep I30 another ~2 years. Tough choice!

Why of course. :)

Picked it up exactly one week ago(within the hour anyway), only managed some 800km so far. Got my home charger working during the week too. Still waiting for roof rack and cargo barrier, one has to be shipped from Canada, the other from Germany. Going for a 220km round trip tomorrow over some pretty hilly countryside, EPA is 200km. It will be fun to see if I can make it or if I need to stop by the new Ionity charger in town on the way home (I kinda want to test that one anyway).

Quick question... why not put the power output (120PS) in your sig rather than the battery capacity (28kwh) ?

Shame you've got to put roof racks on. I imagine the extra drag will adversely affect your range. You'll have to let us know!

I made it back without visiting the quick charger, just about though ended up at a total of 217km and got home with 2% charge remaining, was down on 1% but regenerated back up to 2% when I braked to turn into my driveway. Wife was a little worried the last 50km, after I decided to bail the charger with indicated range of 62km. We ended up getting stuck in a pretty good downpour that sucked a lot of energy (was supposed to be dry all day today so it came out of nowhere). I did stick to the speed limit all the way (like I usually do) no slowing down shenanigans (and ofc AC on all the time...). I reckoned I had just enough to make it home no sweat. The rain ate my 10% security buffer I had planned for, but hey, that's what it was for. :)

Was some pretty curvy roads close to the destination, and I must say I'm very impressed with the handling, a blast taking tight corners, and the power is always there no waiting to get to the right revs or changing gears.

@Shambles Good idea, makes more sense.

@Dazzler Yeah, I expect it too, they won't be mounted all the time though, just use them when I need them. I did order Yakima whispbars that are supposed to be very aerodynamic, but putting anything on them will ofc make a big difference. Hopefully my roofbox is aerodynamic enough to atleast get 150km at decent speed, but its very large (600l) so will have to thoroughly test that once I get the rack. I mainly need the rack to lug planks and other oversized stuff from the builders depot 10km away, but it would be a shame if I can't take my roofbox on holiday anymore.
Readouts seem quite accurate of kwh used, so should be able to get some decent figures for how consumption is affected.

Enjoyed hearing about that. No way I'd cope with that sort of  range anxiety.  My PD makes me stress more than i used to about stuff like that.
Title: Re: Either good or bad (or both) news you'd like to share with us - part #3
Post by: xiziz on June 09, 2019, 13:02:31
Only had range anxiety twice, once driving dad's old tuscon up the mountains it friends when I first got my license and the fuel light lit 70km from the closest town and we did not know if there even was a fuel station there or if we had to go another 50km to our destination before filling. No smartphones or range estimates back then.
Second time was in the i30 and had missed both the fuel light and the range estimate going to dashes in unfamiliar territory due to screaming kid in the
back seat. Ended up doing 70km before I found a station that was workable.

Here the range estimation seems very accurate and goes blank first at 3km remaining. I think range anxiety has more to do with with inaccurate information, the diesel would give up trying to show how much more I could do at 50km left. If you know how far you need to go and you got a good estimate of how far you can go, it's easy to adjust speed or plan another stop so you know that you can make it. Just don't be in a hurry, in that case a full tank of petrol will always feel better.

Most of my trips I won't have to think about range and the few long trips I usually have planned the stops anyway. I deliberately drove it to the edge to know what would happen this time. :)

- My computer power supply is not well, so it's being sent away for warranty purposes. Hoping to get it back before the end of the month
- My i30 has been giving me ESP OFF lights on the dash lately which I have traced to a bad brake light switch. Odd seeing as mine was replaced under the campaign in 2015
+ The switch only cost ZAR231, or around AU$23. A generic Echlin part was AU$13, so I stuck with the OEM part
- The part is on back order, so I have to wait a little bit longer for it to get here
+ It's winter here and I am loving the cooler temps :sweating:
- Fuel price is up to AU$1.70 per litre and this makes me seriously consider downscaling :'(

Hey Dazz! Or as I like to call you, the car-flipper judging by all the cars you've owned since I registered on here

Congrats on the new purchase, I hope you have many miles in her!

We were up in Johannesburg last month and we hired a Kia Picanto as a rental for the weekend. With everyday driving, not going gentle on it (you really have to paddle the gearlever to get the little three-cylinder up to speed at that altitude) we saw a combined fuel consumption of 5.6l/100 and down to 3.0l/100 on the highway. We were both really impressed :goodjob2:

Two weeks deep and done a little more than 1500kms so far, really nice car to drive, especially on curvy mountain roads. Had to fast charge once, stopped for 12 minutes to call goodnight to my daughter and got an additional 100km or so of range (needed 30), free of charge too, never had that happen at a petrol pump.
Rest of the charging done at home, 185kwh for about 150sek, diesel for the same kms would have been 67.5l at 1080sek. Pretty good. My new electricity deal starts on Tuesday, which should halve my electricity cost for charging at home and lower the standard rate by 25%.

Were planning a 1500km round trip this summer, I don't imagine it will be much different from our diesel trips except having to plan the stops in advance. Also got my cargo grid home and checked if both tent and dogs fit in the boot, no problem. :)

We got a catsitter in the last moment and set off for Öland. Did a little more than 1700km during last week. Not a single issue, hitch or fault with the car, charging or range.  :goodjob2:

In fact, the only time we had to wait for the car to finish charging was on the second to last fast charge returning home. A whole minute because I was cheap and wanted that last kwh I had paid for (fixed rate and not per kwh/min/free as other chargers), had enough charge to hit the last charger.
We had to wait a whole minute after everyone was buckled in before I unplugged. Car had finished charging before we were ready to set off all other times. I can live with that inconvenience. :)

Had access to a plug where we were staying so I could granny charge at 6A over night to cut down on public charger usage, helped ofc but would have gotten by without it aswell.

Traveling with a 3yo and two dogs means plenty of stops and I am highly doubtful that the trip would have been any shorter on diesel.

@neptune Hi John, jeepers what a shocker!   :crazy1:

Sure hope you guys will both be ok.  :sweating:

Must be something in the air, I had a very fragile right hip and back over Christmas and yesterday out of the blue a really bad pain (8/10) started in my upper left leg. I cant stand straight or walk straight on it without a terrible crampy type pain. So I'm off to doctor or hospital for scans this morning.  :disapp: :crazy2:

Cheers Phil.  No update from Neptune yet. Hope Mrs Neptune is ok.

I was at the hospital for over 6 hours! X-rays etc.. and a pain killing injection.. I don't know what it was but it sure was effective. They think the issue was muscular although the arthritis in my left hip has got worse than it was 5 years ago when 1st diagnosed. Got a prescription for Panadeine.. only had a couple each day for two days made me very nauseous.  Don't think I have any risk of becoming addicted! Improved enough now to resume my walking regime. :goodjob:

A bit of an update...… wifey came home this arvo after her emergency surgery. Still doped up a bit on pain medication and getting around is painful for her. Plus she seems always tired and sleeping. Totally unusual for her. Time will heal so they say....

Thanks for the update John. Glad she's home. Pain killing medication does that. Hopefully she will be back to her old self soon.

Please give her best wishes from all of us at the i30 owners club!

A flashback from the past! Today I was overtaken by an Aqua Blue i30 GD Wagon, the same model and color which I had earlier.  Of course it wasn't the very same one, which is easy to see from the license plate. Also, this one didn't have the Blue Drive badge, so it must be an automatic whereas I had manual.

At here the i30 has been far from bestseller, which is noticeable as I can't recall very many cases of me driving behind an another GD Wagon. Its sister model, the Kia Cee'd has sold significantly better. But what I do see all the time out there are another Toyota Auris Hybrids, and the new Corolla Hybrid has also been a big hit, continually fighting for the bestseller title against Skoda Octavia.

Oh, and the weather during this so called "winter" has been awful. Nothing new about the November and December being wet and slushy and temperature around 0, but it has largely been the same all the time!  :Pout: Few times we have had something like -5 to -15 and some snow, but those didn't last more than few days at a time. However, the northern Finland (Lapland) has had lots of snow and cold, so the tourists have enjoyed the real winter like before.

And here on the other side of the pond/hemisphere, our little town has had the hottest day on record in 55 years :sweating:

We also had rolling blackouts so we couldn't even run a desk fan to cool down!

:link: Weather office says Sunday the hottest day in Port Elizabeth in 55 years! (https://www.rnews.co.za/article/weather-office-says-sunday-the-hottest-day-in-port-elizabeth-in-55-years)

The Port Elizabeth office of the South African Weather Service says the 40.2° C recorded on Sunday in Port Elizabeth made it the hottest day in 55 years.

"It almost reached the record high of 40.7°C measured in March 1965," said Garth Sampson, SA Weather Service Eastern Cape Client Liaison Officer.

He added that other places that topped the 40°C  mark were:

Uitenhage                           40.6°C,
Coega                                 43.9°C, and
Addo                                  40.7°C.

The rolling blackouts are getting bad here now. Some days we sit without power for 9 - 11 hours per day.

I recently had to buy an inverter and a deep cycle battery just to keep some lights on and I am in the process of converting all my outside lights to solar. Next up is a solar panel to keep the battery charged up, to help bring the electricity charge down.

I feel really sorry for people who have CPAP machines or fishtanks with pumps and heaters that then need to keep going in times like this.

I'm hoping the new CEO of the power utility company can turn things around, but the prognosis is that we are going to continue experiencing rolling blackouts ('load shedding') for at least another year and a half:

:link: High risk of load shedding for the next 18 months: analyst (https://businesstech.co.za/news/energy/362582/expect-high-load-shedding-risk-for-the-next-18-months-analyst/)

TL;DR: Our BIGGEST state-owned national electricity supplier (ie. they supply 90% of power to the country) is a few hundred billion rand in debt because they didn't do any maintenance to their existing power stations, the ones that they built to supply the expanding economy were over budget, delayed, corruption saw billions go missing, and general mismanagement. Because Eskom couldn't supply areas with reliable power, people resorted to alternative power generation methods (solar, wind, generators). Because of the loss of revenue, they have been hiking electricity prices with an average of 13% a year:

Then there is a township called Soweto that owes a collective R18 billion rand in debt because of illegal connections. Eskom goes in and disconnects the illegal users, and they get assaulted by the mobs, people get killed and the illegal connections are put back the very next day. Not even our millitary can asssit, and the police also get their arses handed to them when they try to quell the protests.

With all the substations that have had to be turned off and on so much, they are blowing up left, right and centre. So you might sit without power for 11 hours a day, only for it to not come back on for an extra day or two. The switchgear is not meant to be turned off and on again so frequent - it causes arcing and damages the contacts, not to mention the huge inrush current as 5000+ houses have their hot water geysers turn on at 3kW a pop simultaneously which causes brownouts and voltage spikes that damages appliances and electronics.

/PhireSide is now tired of typing, and will retire for the afternoon. Just thought I'd share how messed up we have it here :sweating:

EDIT: I realise this all sounds like a rant, and it is. I just get so worked up about these avoidable things and then also when I think of all the other folks who are sitting with the same issues. Our collective blood pressure could probably spin all the OCGT's to provide enough power to the entire continent :crazy1:

Take care, gents :goodjob2:

We had some really good coverage of the fires here in our local news - it is so scary to think that it happened so quick, and the amount of manpower needed to contain a blaze of that magnitude is almost unimaginable. I'm having interesting times now as my winter vacation is approaching. I have a booking for one week in Tenerife, where they have just found 4 cases of coronavirus!  :scared: The whole hotel, about 1000 guests included, has been put in quarantine as preventive measure for at least 14 days, and it's less than 10 km away from the hotel which I have booked. It would be a miracle should there be no more cases during next weeks...

As long as Finnish authorities do not declare an official travel warning which tells to avoid traveling there, I won't get my money back if I decide to cancel the trip. It's still over 3 weeks away, and for now I can only watch what happens next. The whole thing was still unheard of when I booked the trip before Christmas.

Fingers crossed mate. That's no good, but unfortunately it's going to be a very common scenario for a while.

We've had to defer our next road trip for a while as my eldest daughter has moved home to have her first child (due end of March) due to a failed relationship.

Each port call has a different cost so I guess they get back a percentage of whatever it is if they cant disembark.

8 days before my vacation and flight to Tenerife, TUI informed that all their trips have been canceled until 3th April at least, and the customers will get refund. Things are escalating quickly - a week ago we had something like 10 corona cases in Finland, today 155.

During the last week I was already thinking I need to cancel the trip despite the loss of money, not only for possible infection (especially during the flight), but for the risk of spreading it to everyone, getting quarantined, unable to return the rental car on time, or having difficulties returning home as flights could also be canceled. Anyway, the problem was now solved on my behalf. I'm still losing almost 200 EUR as the train ticket and hotel in Helsinki before/after flight are not refundable.

Toilet paper and hand sanitizer hoarders are also seen at here. I know better, and bought only one package yesterday. I also bought few bottles of Corona Extra beer for revenge!

@tohis

Sorry about your trip but a reasonable result financially in the end. I feel sorry for the Corona Beer Company. They have lost millions, so good on you for supporting them.

I was initially disappointed that we had to defer/cancel our next planned road trip due to heavily pregnant daughter's arrival on our doorstep, but in hindsight it could have been a lot worse. I week or so later and I would have booked the boat and probably most of the accommodation.

We are tending to have lots of small local treats and trips to make up for it.

We're not serious until we ban any remaining Toyota Coronas from the roads.

Seriously though,  heaps of schools here who have overseas excursions ( bands etc) booked are calling them off. No refunds. Parents are out thousands of dollars.

QLD Gov't has actually banned all such trips for state run schools.
Most aren't covered by travel insurance.

Travel agencies are laying off staff. In the case of my mate's wife who runs an agency, she's been reduced to three day weeks at half pay. That or finish up.

Not surprised. If other states had the luxury of coastal borders, they'd do the same.

However, at last count, 4 cases of Corona have been found in Tassie.

Even Bill Gates started with just a few bucks.
The design is what they call parametric, meaning you choose your own scale. For full scale, the buyer will need to slice the design into printer bed sized chunks, either glued, fastened or interlocked. I'll even do the redesign on request. :victory:

My original dry box design is alive! :yahoo:

(https://i.ibb.co/5kZmMzS/drybox.jpg) (https://ibb.co/kJZjHrw)

I bought a 4 L round 'cake tin' airtight container from Cheap as Chips for $4. The sides are not vertical and they have ridges for the lid and locking lip so I couldn't just design the support base by subtracting a perfect cylinder, meaning I first designed a faithful model of the container itself.

Once done, I created a brick and subtracted the upturned bottom section of the container model from the brick, leaving a perfect support base.

I then designed rollers to snap fit onto commonly available skateboard bearings. They look remarkably like train wheels, with one flanged edge. I then designed the frame for the rollers and offset the height of one side of the frame to account for the slight incline in the 'cake tin' side.

Then I designed 45 degree offset spacers to slide snugly over nylon M8 threaded rod traversing the box wall (which I found in the butt stops of the shooting range on base - long story) after I had tapped its centre for a 2 mm hole. This hole accommodated about 60 cm of Teflon tube, which carries the 1.75 mm filament airlessly to the extruder waiting below.

Fair to say I'm mildly chuffed. :victory:

Well it’s been a while, and a lot has happened.  I’ll see if I can make sense of it all, though I’m not going to use the good/bad scenarios because it’s mostly bad and I don’t want to depress myself any further.

I have been very busy at work, well that is until I retired.  I took leave from mid September and then when that ran out in mid January I took the plunge. See how exquisitely I manage to time things.  :whistler:

In August my husbands brother in law passed away. Anthonys sister passed a couple of years ago, so we had been looking after the husband (just checking on him, not full time care) since then. He died at home, alone and wasn’t found for a couple of days. It was quite a shock. He made my husband his executor, so we are now trying to sell his house.  We did a lot of renovations as they were both a little bit simple and had done nothing to the house for about 25 years.  It was a mess. We have had two cancelled contracts, and now are looking at falling house prices.  Did I mention how exquisite my timing is?

In January we sold our house (yes we were juggling two houses for a few months...it was very stressful) and after 5, yes count them, five weeks waiting for their finance to come through we moved out in early March. We are now hibernating in a rental. It’s not too bad, I just wish I could see my kids and my mum. Timing?

Speaking of my mum, my dad passed away in January. He had fallen and broken both his hips in the last year.  He was told he had to go into a nursing home, so he just gave up and let go.  He was 92 and mum was 94 in March.  She is coping ok, she just gets a bit teary every now and again.  As do I.  I haven’t been able to see her for some weeks now, but I talk to her on the phone. One of my sisters is doing her running around for her (she’s only 70  :D). Again, exquisitely timed.

Well, that’s my story. Sorry for channeling War and Peace, but a bit has happened.

On this, my 61st birthday I say thank you to you all for reading my tale of woe and I promise to try to be a better and more consistent  contributor to this website that has given me much pleasure over the last 10 or so years.  :DoubleKiss: :drinks:

Thanks Daz. I am hoping things look up.  :HuggsNKisses: :fingers:

We have to sell the other house, it’s not looking likely in this climate unfortunately. I keep reading how prices are going to drop for houses. That’s good for us to buy a new home, and shitty for us to sell this other.  There are five beneficiaries including my husband. We reno’d in the hope of getting the best we could for everyone. Probably not worth it in hindsight.

Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it. I will try my best to stay active on the forum, hopefully life won’t get anymore complicated.  :Good_luck:

2nd child, had a little boy in 2018. Job is more sentimental than money, I like the work family there. 5 years there in July. As a casual, you have to be available for x shifts which allows flexibility but also means on the chopper when it comes to current climate. Main job is thankfully secure. Cheers

Yep, that's the business. Another way to go is PVC electrical conduit. Bang a few bigger bits into the ground and loop longer bits in and drape the cover over the top. But your solution is a lot neater.

@Lakes
No mate no Killers.
Mature males and juveniles showing off.
The splash from a juvi doing a breach is about a 3rd of the splash of a mature tail slap.

Used to see them when I was in Narooma & four years back I was in a cafe on Kianga Beach with pushy group having lunch & I spited a Killer Whale, I love the Killer whale Museum at Eden! And the History. They needed to be tough to go out in those row boats any time at night!

I’ve spoken before about my wonderful timing recently. Well it continues.

Just as Victoria records double digit rises in Covid-19 cases, my husband’s uncle passes away. In far North Queensland. Lockdown commences. We’ll be live streaming a funeral tomorrow morning.  Sounds horrible, and I’m sure that’s what it will be.   :'(

Three deaths in less than twelve months. I’m really hoping things turn around soon, I’m not sure I can emotionally cope with another funeral.  :Good_luck:

Today's Covid numbers in Finland: 7293 known infections, 329 deaths (population 5.5 million). From March to early May about 100 new cases were found daily, but then it has been gradually slowing, and in July it has been less than 10 new cases daily. Most schools and libraries, bars and night clubs were closed, and restaurants and cafes were allowed to sell food only for take-away. No stay-at-home lockdown was ever set. Since late May the restrictions have been gradually lifted and the state of emergency was also discontinued. So I guess we survived pretty good compared to many other countries, however the danger is not over and the ongoing holiday season has the risk of causing the second wave to come. The economical impact is however hitting pretty hard globally and we are no exception.

Some land borders have been reopened and we are now able to travel to other Nordic and Baltic countries where the Covid situation has been similar, and more borders were reopened in this week. However, in our western neighbour Sweden it has been much worse, and the border is still pretty much unidirectionally closed (but Sweden does allow inbound traffic). Let's hope our fellow member Xiziz is still okay!

@xiziz are you ok?

Australia managed the 1st wave really well with a similar number of cases to you guys with almost 5 times the population and only around one third the number of deaths. Now for some crazy reason the 2nd wave has taken off with a vengeance in one state of Australia in particular (Victoria):with hundreds of new cases being identified daily!  :crazy1: :crazy1:

Yes Australia has done well irrespective of a massive cruise ship blunder in NSW!  :whistler: After trying to incinerate the country during summer, the government finally started to take scientific advice and we went to a level 3 lock down. But most credit goes to the State Premiers who took actions to suit their own State, at times independent of the national government.

Unfortunately, Victoria went on the cheap when it came to securing their quarantine hotels. Two 'security' guards were sleeping with detainees. We now have that outbreak in Victoria. If anything it demonstrates how aggressive COVID is.

I feel sorry for the land locked European countries who have to plug many holes in their fences. However, the British government, showing its usual verbal grit and tenacity has been determined to leave the EU , but couldn't find the courage to lock the island's border.  :crazy1:
The result , a massive on going infection rate, business remains cr#p, and a huge death count that is somewhat fictitious. Like Holland etc, the deaths in old people's homes are yet to be calculated and included.

On the other hand, New Zealand went to level 4 lockdown = eradication and now they have virtually no new cases and business is up and running. Given the recent incompetence in Vic , the OZ/NZ travel bubble is off the table indefinitely.  :blubber:

Food for thought @Dazzler . Tazzie and Queensland should not get too complacent. We have the ever hungry Allan Joyce  :disapp:. A mate of mine told me that this week he flew return Brisbane to Mackay. The Qantas plane was nearly full, the seating was the usual cattle class with no distancing, mate was one of only four people wearing a mask. Even the Qantas stewards did NOT wear masks.

The old man hadan hour or so between speacialist appointments the other day.
Started tyre kicking at a dealer. Young fella comes out full of spiel, ready to get a sale. Starts telling him about all the amazing safety features he should have on his car at his age. ( nearly 85 ) Dad starts telling him about his first car - cobbled together from 3 wrecks and 1 abandoned car. Those T - models were practical. Youngen says -the what??, couldn't have that now days , you need all of these features to ensure you are not fatigued or stressed from driving around town or on those long trips of 2 hrs or more.
Old man cracked up , thanked him for the best laugh he'd had in a while and said that if he ever needs all of that electronic crap to drive a car, he'll hand his license in and catch the bus with all of the money saved from insurance, rego, running costs..   :victory:   :victory:

It’s a positive, I think, that we settled on the brother in laws house on Thursday. We had to make sure it was ready to go a couple of weeks early because we knew stage 4 lockdown was coming.  It all went off ok. They were moving in this weekend, so it’s not our concern anymore. Won’t stop my husband  though, he’ll find something to worry about.

A negative is that this lockdown is stopping any work being done on the apartment we have bought. It is just a two storey deep hole in the ground.  In the meantime we are living in a rental. At least that gives Anthony something to worry about.  We had thought we would have to rent for a year, now it looks like it will be a lot longer. Now we are both pensioners, he was concerned about us having to use savings to cover the rent. I suppose it’s a positive that because of the lockdown we are spending a lot less, so we have covered our rent, no problems.

Another positive is that my old work asked me to do a bit of casual work for them. Gives me something to keep my brain active and a bit of extra income.  I also get to reconnect with all my old workmates, even though it’s via Microsoft Teams.

A real positive is we are both healthy.   :shakehands1:

My winter vacation is on, however because of you-know-what there's not much travel plans for now. Vaccinations are progressing slowly because of vaccine shortages, and some recent blood clot cases shortly after getting the shot (however those have likely been coincidental). Estimations of when we fill finally get the needle in the *ss are changing almost daily, so no one knows...

A week ago I went to see the Koli ice road, which is 7 km long road going over frozen Lake Pielinen. It is usually officially opened in January or February when the ice is at least 40 cm thick so it can be safely driven over by car, and closed in early April when the conditions start to deteriorate. In some recent winters however, thanks to the climate change, it has been opened only for short times or not opened at all. During the season it may also be temporarily closed because of bad weather.

Hey guys,

Lots happening this side of the ocean!

+We moved house in February to a freestanding house. Made a tidy profit on the sale of the townhouse, too! About a 30% ROI in the +-3 years we stayed there.

-Registration for the new house is still not done. Endless issues with getting the new plans approved by the council (attorneys lost the original plans, the f**ks)

+We got engaged last year October, and we are currently planning our wedding. ETA March 2022!

-The steering knock on the i30 is so bad, I decided to tackle it this weekend since I felt brave, but I am regretting it as my good tools all went missing after our move.

-Our town water levels (dam levels) are below 11% combined. Our main reservoir is just above 4%. The blasted municipality refuses to declare it an emergency, so we cannot get state funding. But when Cape Town's dam levels dipped below 30% last year, all hell broke loose and the local authority actually sprang into action and put measures in place to make sure there were backup plans in place.

Yesterday I got the long-awaited Covid shot, and will receive second one at the end of August. Like elsewhere, we have lots of elderly people and other high risk groups who are in priority to get vaccinated so it took time before my age group was entitled.

From now on I have to wear a foil hat when being near 5G towers, to avoid being controlled!  :crazy1:  :crazy2:

I also booked a vacation in Tenerife at March 2022, and hopefully it won't end up being canceled. You never know about those new variants, which in worst case could be highly resistent to current vaccines and kick us back to the beginning.

Time to bump this thread!

+ Went for my first Pfizer shot last week. Had a sore arm for a few days, but running on all cylinders again
+ Lost a bit of weight since joining the gym two months ago. My endurance is also massively improved, where I used to gasp for breath after jogging 5 minutes on the treadmill, I can now do 45 minutes with ease.
+ Wedding date is inching closer, and I am so damned excited
- My i30 seems to have an issue with the OBC where it flickers every now and again. Seems the LEDs might be faulty, if I look at similar threads
- The house transfer is still not done, nearly a year later. Patience is running out at a rate of knots.

Hey Dazz, merry Christmas and a happy new year and to all on here! Hope you are doing better, Darryl.

So an update on the above...this should be coming in sometime this week:

It's not the one I mentioned prior, but one from a town closer to us. I couldn't find one I liked in white, so I reluctantly went for a black one. But who knows, it might grow on me. If not, I might look into wrapping it.

Your new Audi looks to be in good condition and I hope it serves you well. I’ve always liked Audi A4s. There doesn’t seem to be many A4 Avants (‘wagon” to us in Aus) in Australia, apart from the performance ones, the RS4, and my favourite, the RS6.
I this doesn’t mean Hippo is on the way out though !

Thank you - it needs some paint correction done and a few things that need to be fixed here and there, but I think it should be a keeper.

We only have Volvo's and Audi's and some older VW wagons here, and the BMW Touring models although they are scarce. Hatchbacks are very popular here (The VW Polo is the best selling car in SA) and station wagons seem to be dying a quick death.

Hippo is getting on with age and I think it might, unfortunately, be time to retire it. I did offer passing it on to my folks to use, but they stay on a gravel road outside town so it wouldn't be the ideal vehicle for them - when the roads are muddy they would need something with a bit more ground clearance and 4x4 or diff lock at the very least to navigate the roads.

+ I might be picking up an Audi A4 B7 Avant soon, but I am still working out the formalities as the car is all the way in Johannesburg, a 10-hour drive from me.
Wow! It is all happening Phil.. apart from crashing my new MG plug in hybrid and having bad gastro on and off for around 4 days I'm just doing my usual LOL
Hey Dazz, merry Christmas and a happy new year and to all on here! Hope you are doing better, Darryl.

So an update on the above...this should be coming in sometime this week:

(https://i.ibb.co/PhmP6Fq/image.png) (https://ibb.co/Xs2KCjc)

It's not the one I mentioned prior, but one from a town closer to us. I couldn't find one I liked in white, so I reluctantly went for a black one. But who knows, it might grow on me. If not, I might look into wrapping it.

Thanks Phil tummy is better but MG still being repaired!

That looks the goods. Despite the colour I'm sure you will be wrapped with your new vehicle!

See what I did there! 😁

Some recent stuff for us;

Bad - 3 year old and I spent 10.5 hours at the hospital getting his 3 lips turned back into 2 after running and slipping on the tiles and collecting the skirting board

Good - saw the surgeon yesterday and it's healing magnificently and the stitches are dissolving without intervention

Bad - 3 yo still running on the freaking tiles

Good/Bad - sold my xr6, wasn't intending to made a half arse comment on FB and it was gone 2 days later for the figure I threw out

Good/Bad - had to spend $$ on towbar for Bertie, has a higher tow rating than the xr6 but I won't be able to abuse it like I did the ute  :scared:

Good/Bad - decided since we'd have a tow bar we could buy a camper trailer that was nice and light, went from a soft floor camper to ordering a Jayco Lark yesterday. Great for is but Bad for savings haha. It escalated very quickly

Only two weeks to the trip to Tenerife - unless I get a last minute Covid infection or even a casual flu. Respiratory symptoms, no matter the cause of it, would get me banned from the flight or entering the destination. Not mentioning the same infection risk at there as well...  :scared:

Wearing a face mask during the flight is mandatory, except when eating and drinking. I wonder how the virus knows that so it won't spread during eating?  :P

Petrol prices are record high, about 2 EUR per liter, thanks to the crude oil prices and ever increasing tax burden. Those recent geopolitical events will not help that matter either.

Aye @tohis, the tension from the resulting conflict up there has a knock-on effect everywhere. I hope the situation is resolved quick. War is such an unnecessary evil. I do hope everything works out for your trip, though.

-+ Said goodbye to the i30 this week. It felt a bit surreal turning up to the buyer's house and seeing it parked there. I thought to myself "Hey, that was my car for the past eight years. And it treated me so well during that time".
+ It will make a great car for the guy's daughter, who has just finished varsity and needed a car to move about town.
+ Our wedding date is inching ever closer. 8 more days to go!
- Our house transfer is still ongoing, nearly a year and a half later. If I knew how frustrating buying a house during covid was I would never have sold :crazy1:

Hang in there, Phil. I'm not sure how I'll deal with saying goodbye to Firty in the distant future, not just for the great experience but for what is probably the last Diesel or even ICE car I'll own.

In life's episodes such as buying or building a house, I like to remember the old adage:
- when is the best time to buy a house? 20 years ago.
- when is the next best? Now.
When you look back you'll likely see that there is never a particularly bad time to do so.

Enjoy Tenerife!

Thanks Gonz & Dazz! The wedding ended up being absolutely stunning despite the awful temperatures (39 degrees C and 80% humidity) so I was sweating like a pig in my penguin suit...but it was magical and we had a blast! We're off to Knysna for our honeymoon in three weeks. Only a short weekend away but a well-needed one, as work has been murder lately and some time off will do the both of us good.

+We've been told the house transfer is due to be completed by this coming Friday.
+I already have a list of things I want to change
-I need a budget for said list of things I want to change
+Winter is coming so mosquito season is nearly over
-The Avant is getting an oil change later today. I'm a bit worried about the oil filter housing as I can already see the previous owner has somehow chewed the filter housing up something awful.
-My mobile phone is on its last legs, but I am hoping it can survive until bonus month (August)

Only two weeks to the trip to Tenerife - unless I get a last minute Covid infection or even a casual flu.

It was challenging to stay healthy, but I just made it!

Only 5 days before the trip I got hit by fever and fatigue! :faint: The Covid home test I made was negative however, and I had to pay and go to the official PCR test to be certain about it (no more free tests for vaccinated with mild symptoms). That also turned out negative, however the symptoms continued and I still had some fever when I drove to Helsinki for the flight at next day, but after sleeping in the hotel I got cured by miracle and felt healthy when walking into the plane. Phew!  :sweating: I think it may have been rhinovirus or something similar. At least I would have got refund in case of Covid, but with a mild flu of unknown cause there would have been no refund.

The trip itself went well, I got back home last Sunday and still feeling healthy. However at Wednesday the Covid tracing app (https://koronavilkku.fi/en/) in my phone gave an alert of possible exposure.  :scared: The exact time or location is not available due to privacy, but obviously someone at the return flight, sitting near me, was diagnosed positive shortly after returning home. I made an another home test which was negative again, so I think I survived one more time.

I will post some more story and pics to the Members trips section when I have time for that...

Glad you're okay, tohis. I think you spoke that illness into existence  :scared:
