Please help I'm having a major problem with my lovely i30 2009. Four days ago I jumped in to my car and turned on the ignition it turned over then stalled. I had no idle at all. Got to work put it kept on stalling about half a mile from work it started to make a horrible engine banging noise. To shorten the story never drove it again but got to work. Car now at local garage but they can't seem to find the problem they tried a coil pack but know luck. They tried taken exhaust off in case of blockage I have had no engine warning lights plus no warning lights no luck. Help plz  :'(

I don't know anything, there are some proper clever lads in this club who might be able to suggest things to consider.

The only thing I would do in your circs is disconnect the battery and force the ECU to reboot.

Good luck.....

I am gonna follow this to see how ya get one   :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Hello.

Did your local garage manage to read any DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes)?

:welcum: Really sorry to hear of your problem. Hope the banging noise doesn't signify major damage. Very hard to diagnose something like this from the other side of the planet, but hopefully our super tech Tim can come up with some suggestions. Calling @cruiserfied   ....

Did you recently put fuel in?

If so was it the correct fuel?
  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

Just a thought, could it be dirty fuel, or water in the fuel? Has your mechanic checked the fuel filter?

"banging" There are two types. Banging from incorrect ignition timing causing the fuel to burn at the wrong time, in which case I'd suspect the ecu or other sensors, Crankshaft position etc.

or there's banging as in physical such as two metal parts hitting each other, in which case you'd have to suspect oil pressure and quantity.

What type was it

Ok im going to assume your I30 is petrol since thats where you have posted the topic.

Would i also be correct in saying it is a 2lt engine?

Stalling without logging and DTC's is difficult. Very often it can be related back to bad fuel as this is one of the few areas that isn't monitored by DTC's
A blocked exhaust is another area, i know you said they removed exhaust but the most likely place for an exhaust blockage is the catalytic converter and to remove that would mean the whole manifold was off.

Why did they try replacing the coil pack? Testing for spark is simple and if there was no spark that would definately lead then to the problem.

I would suggest taking a fuel sample from the fuel hose at the engine and remove the fuel pump to inspect in tank conditions.

Thanks Tim, sounds like we were heading in the right direction.  :goodjob:

BTW, it's probably a 1.6 or maybe a 1.4 Petrol (same motor as the old getz I think) Pretty sure they don't/didn't get the 2.0 petrol in Europe.

Few and far between in the FD.
Every Czech built GD in Australia (CW & 3-door) is 1.6lt.
