I got the impression that Luke Madden wasn't too impressed.

Agreed, i think that everything is relative though and because he is (forced?) into comparing it with the Scirocco, it is bound to fall kinda short of that.  The turbo version may well bring it up, but they only have a range of a couple of grand in my opinion, then it would be akin to buying Android vs Apple, the reason I went with Apple in the end was because a good Android device is the same price......why buy a Veloster if the price is the same as the Scirocco will be the view of many members of Joe Public.  :undecided:

Personally think the engine lets it down, im going for a turbo i reckon in a few years time myself, (hopefully or i40 tourer)

Doubt hyundai will bring a different, more powerful version out, or even a diesel?
I think it's well equipped, and top similar spec sirocco,(is it possible) im sure it would be a lot more expensive. (media screen , parking sensors, etc etc.)
Most negative review so far of it though :)

Just read it from magazine two hours ago in 7-eleven, same topic. The normal version of Veloster is not that good as Scirocco. It should equip with turbo to match the aggressive look and establish its own fashion style.  :goodjob2:

Is the Veloster meant to be "as good as the Scirocco"??
I think the styling of the Veloster has instantly put it against the VW, but I have said in the past and will say again now, is it not competing with the Renault Megane Coupe as well.  The press fail to mention that the base 1.4 TSi Scirocco has about the same performance as the Veloster, but if you configure that base model with the included options of a Veloster you get to just shy of £25K!!   The instant comparison I would make with the Veloster is the 1.6 petrol, 110hp version of the Renault, priced around the £17K mark, which oddly enough has not been compared to the Scirocco in the press.  This car compares well with similar emission and performance data of the Veloster, but with less standard equipment, adding the packs takes it to a similar price as the Veloster.
http://www.renault.co.uk/cars/model/newmeganecoupe/trim/expression/PricesAndSpecs.aspx

Now if we go down the root of wolf dressed in sheeps clothing and continue the comparison with Scirocco, then the i30 1.6 doesn't have the performance of a Focus Zetec S, Golf, Astra etc etc, but that does not prevent it from being a bloody good car, so I would say that the press need to consider their direct comparisons a little better.

Having said that we all know that VW and the press have consistently had a "different" relationship than the press with other manufacturers, the Golf GTi was the original hot hatch, which lost it's crown to the Pug 205GTi, but then mysteriously then relost the crown to the Escort Cossie.  When did Pug hand it back??  It was certainly never reported

I also think that whilst there is probably not much to choose between the Veloster, Scirocco 1.4 and Megane Coupe 110 in the styling department, the Veloster wins the practicality hands down, a coupe which doesnt require rear passengers to clamber over the front seats??  Winner!

Oh and did I mention the 5 year, unlimited mileage warranty?

Well said :)
Apparently there isnt much room in the back seats, but again, its a coupe, you wont transport a full load over a 100 mile trip.
I reckon the veloster is going to to very very VERY well. It may not beat the sirocco directly like for like, but will come very close, and the turbo version wil defo giv it a run for it's money.

In Regards to the renault.. its french.. end of.

5 year triple car plan more than likely.5 year warranty, 5 years RAC, and 5 years free vehicle health check up (UK only I think)

The Veloster will be released here very soon. I'm looking forward to seeing one in the flesh. It has grown on me a bit but I doubt we would buy one

For many people on more of a tight budget the tipping factor for the Veloster will be the Warranty that I dont think VW can yet match?

Also the fact that Hyundai has built up a reputation for being very reliable.

Why do skodas come with heated rear windows?? to keep your hands warm while your pushing them.

I honestly dont think ive seen a Hyundai broken down at the side of the road.
Yes ive seen a few on the back of flat bed's  erm clutch and immobiliser were the only 2 main issues i remember.
I usually notice French cars

I've driven the Veloster with 1.6 petrol engine. It is good, but in my opinion, it needs more power (with that I mean turbine). From what I've heard, they should start selling 2.0 turbo soon. That will be much better. Till then..it's okay to watch and okay to cruise in, but not "enjoyable" to drive.

I think its only coming in a 1.6 turbo. but 200+ horses
and as suggested by friends, the turbo set up will b low power only. .. room for improvement :P

Thats the problem with the Nurburgring, not a bloody petrol station to be seen all the way around it!!

As for comfort, it was excellent, nice padded seat, 40 inch screen, mug of coffee, all mod cons in these modern motors ya know!

PS In stock trim its only 201 bhp, I forgot I added a sports air filter

I saw an orange one at the Southport Hyundai dealer the other day, then 2 bright shiny (and faster) red ones being off loaded at the Versace on the Gold Coast. Some kind of launch perhaps?

Must say I liked the orange one better (or is that metallic beer gold?).

They look nice, show the new face off well. But I doubt that I'll own one, the diesel pump won't fit in the fuel filler for one, and only having 3 doors would make for much back pain putting kids in and out of car seats.

I thought the 3rd door was supposed to help with that  :whistler:

What do you mean faster, are they not all just the 1.6GDi at the moment??

In the UK the orange is called Vitamin C, got to say I like it too, in fact the only colour of the Veloster I am not so keen on is the red. :undecided:

Lifting 14kg of kid across a back sear and manoeuvring them into the back seat is not excellent for ones back.

Here is a quirky review, what caught my attention was the usual story when it comes to pricing, it looks like the old story of exchanging a $ for a £ sign with "rip-off Britain" again.

The price of the car she tests is approx $22,500 which is just over £14,000, but no our price for the DCT Sport as she tested here is £21,745 and she had the optional media pack added at £1100.
