Does this seem suspiciously cheap to you or am I missing something obvious?
New car, diesel auto, Elite not Active, new not a demo, $33990 on road, drive away?
Do you think they have made a mistake?

I'll toss you for it.. Has to be a mistake (It is the same car as I sat in at the Launceston showroom) that had something like $44,880 on the window

Well that was quick!
I just received a call from the Hyundai dealership and yes, Carsales have made a mistake.
It's $33990 drive away for an Active i40 diesel sedan and $38990 for an Elite i40 diesel drive away.
So still cheaper than Tassie Dazz but an extra five grand over and above what was advertised.
I'm going to go in on Monday morning and have a chat to see what they can do.

I guess they have a "captive" market in Tasmania.
But even with transportation costs, it would be beneficial to shop interstate when the time comes although it might make servicing a bit diffcult.

They've amended the WA one and here it is.

Mate, drive it back. Five grand is five grand and it more than pays for the holiday plus you get to see the greatest state again.

It would be just nicely run-in by the time you got home and it would be giving you great economy.

You'd be ok if you only travelled in daylight.
Is the Indian-Pacific expensive?
That would be a nice trip to do with your trade-in then there would be no risk and you could have a leisurely drive home again.

We might be doing a Melbourne to Mount Gambier run like Kittikat did (but via the great ocean road on the outward journey) in October.. Still in early stages of planning

Because my Dad'd health is starting to fail he might be moving to the Kingscliff area to be closer to us (the three sons)

He is keen tho keep the XK8 so the plan is (if he moves) for my eldest Brother Richard to fly over and drive the XK8 with Dad as a passenger from Perth to Kingscliff (in NSW)

I went into the dealership today with the black MC Accent as a starting point, with a view to taking the i30 in later this week.
Trading on a new i30 (diesel Elite or Premium) they offered $3000 for the Accent and said that subject to seeing my i30 (they have seen photos), they'd be struggling to get to double figures ($10,000) for two reasons:
(1) 133,000 kms.
(2) Manual transmission - because most demand is for automatics

They're not even trying.
Interesting that they have an identical (other than colour) MC Accent in their used car lot at $8990.
The way this is going, I can see some mods to an FD coming up because they're not getting it at that price in a fit.

Yes, it's amazing how little your car is worth until it comes time for THEM to sell it...

When I traded my old EB Foulcan for the i30 they offered me $500 and when I said it had a gas conversion worth $2300 which was only installed 12 months earlier, they replied it didn't matter as no-one wants LPG powered cars...

They then pointed at the front tyres saying they were scrubbing so they'd have to replace them......Didn't matter that the tyres had less than 20,000k on them and the only "scrubbing" was a fine line on the edge from turning at full lock into their car park.....

Funny enough I felt no guilt whatsoever for not informing them that the catalytic convertor was rooted and I had been unable to use much throttle on the drive over....

Rusty, I presume that was the dealer you bought your Hyundai from. They've probably made a note on your vehicle profile to get the money back somehow

Revenge is sweet.

I accept that trade-in prices have to be low enough to allow them to make a profit and they have to provide statutory warranties on used cars, pay wages, business operating costs, etc.
But, to offer one third of what they will retail it for is stretching it a bit.
Two thirds I could understand.

Both my last Hyundai trade-ins have been £1000 less than the price put on the screen for re-sale, but given I took £800 of the screen price of my i40 I don't think that I did too badly there.

Some inside information on my short time in the game (selling cars + having a family with a car dealership)

How they seem to work down here with a car worth say 8k or more retail is allow say $3000 margin + anything that requires fixing so say another $300 off if they have to put 6 months rego on, another $200 off for replacing a couple of unsafe tyres... so if they think the best they will sell it for is 8K they will start at 5K less $300 less $200 less so much for this and that .. Next thing you know you're down to 4K or even 3K as a trade...

The other thing to be careful of is sharing the reasons why you are trading your old car in (when they test drive your trade in or if they come with you when you are testing the one you are going to buy ...)

If you say this is a lot quieter than mine ... or I'm looking for something more economical a good salesman will try and play mind games with you if you decide not to proceed

But you said your existing car is noisy and uses lots of fuel...

As Brian is suggesting it is the changeover that matters.. Not what they offer as a trade in..

Maybe try a "broker" Dave .. you don't have to proceed if they can't come up with a deal you are happy with...

I know it's a hassle but it's probably worth your while to sell it privately, Dave....

As for brokers, I tried one when I was shopping around for my i30 and they couldn't do as good a deal as I eventually got through a dealer myself and they too only offered $500 for my trade....

I have contacted a broker (a large, well known one) and they wanted me to bring my best price to them and then they would conduct a reverse auction and guarantee to beat my best price by at least $500.
But that to me negates the reason you'd go to a broker because I had to do all the running around, negotiating, playing one dealer off against another, etc to get my best price to take to the broker.

Didn't seem worth the effort to me.
