I heard on the news this morning there are already 5 dead on Victorian roads this holiday period.
Then you get these things happening.
The police must be tearing their hair out.

People do very strange and stupid things on the roads.

The other day there was a female driver going in the wrong direction on the motorway.

She of course crashed another car and now the poor guy she crashed into, will have to live the rest of his life with only 1 leg. She had her to kids in her car, 1 of them, 12 year old, suffered only little damage, the other one, 5 year old, suffered a broken pelvic.

She was drunk, and is now accused of drunk driving and endangering others life.

Of course she didn't get hurt herself. She said she thought it was all the other that was driving the wrong way.. :scared:

I hope they will keep her drivers license forever.

We had one like that here a couple of weeks ago.
She was in a BMW
Managed to finally (after about 20 klms IIRC) hit another car head on.
One dead and 4 seriously injured.
She survived.

I must admit I was the same Dazz. Did some stupid things and was incredibly lucky on more than one occasion.

Closest shave I ever had (which I did mention once before) was doing 100mph (6500 RPM) flat out in 4th gear in my fairly new Fiat 128 3P (hatchback) came around a sweeping bend and a big coca-cola truck was only doing about 40mph ... Slammed on the brakes and swerved..

Somehow managed to miss him.  :sweating: Ended up next to him (on the wrong side of the road hidden in a cloud of tyre smoke) If a big truck had been coming the other way or a car full of kids ... :disapp: Slowed me down for only a day or so I think  :-[

I think we all have done stupid things when we started to drive, but most of us gets wiser at age, and especially when we get kids, we think much more about how we behave on the roads.

Reminds me of a time heading south on Logan Rd on the south side of Brisbane. There was a great right hand bend and a couple of miles earlier I had found myself beside another Renault 10 (the driver of which I knew). So of course we got stuck into it. It was about 11pm on a week night and no other traffic, untill we slid sideways, side-by-side around this corner - only to have to break violently to avoid the police car heading the same way - much more slowly.  :Drive: :Drive: :Drive:
Old mate peeled off to the right and I took the next left. :honk: :honk:

Well, old mate (Bob Firman was his name) went home.
So did I via all the back roads I could find. I was living at Mt Gravatt at that stage so a few miles of turns. About 15 minutes later when I came back up to Logan Rd to cross it into my street, guess who was stopped at the red light when I drove across?

He didn't follow me so I guess he couldn't ID the two cars in his rear view mirror (even though they were pretty much sideways as they braked. :-[).

Agree about the "braver at 20" bit.
I don't know if I'm more aware these days or not. My wife hates driving with me because I still tend to drive on my reflexes. I have a very clear understanding of what my car is capable of and am continually (subconsciously) checking the rear view mirrors and assessing potential run off areas in case of an emergency.
All of this means I don't think far enough ahead - which is a bad thing.
Probably my biggest failing is that I concentrate so much on the road around me that I sometimes forget a turn-off.

I was taught in police driver training to drive to a system and I still do it to this day.
I always follow the sequence and the system.
However, my reflexes and my eyesight are nowhere near as good now as they were when I was twenty so I don't drive the same as I did then. Plus, if you don't use it, you lose it and driving fast and safely takes constant practice which is not possible now.
So I just try to drive to the conditions, both road and mine.

I wish.
It's just a taught sequence in driving that took us three solid weeks of hooning driving around on roads and racetracks to master.  :D

Chocolaty Claire.. Geddit  :snigger:

I can be quite vague at times these days (sort of day dreaming) Mainly around town, but I do try to be aware of pedestrians (especially as they may not hear my Hybrid coming)  :sweating:

My eldest Brother who was reasonably successful at Motor Racing gave me quite a few tips which i still use, like being aware of the front wheels of other cars (they turn before the car does)
