HI Guys,

Just thought I would mention that the Gas Struts on the rear hatch have failed in the last couple of days. Not sure if others have had the same issue... but something maybe to be aware of. (The misses got a donk on the head in a partial failure.. but now there's no resistance at all).

I have the car booked in for the 45,000km service in a couple of weeks, and mentioned it to the service lady who said no problem.

Quite interesting to see it fail after only 12 months old. Useage would be maybe once a day on average.

Just thought I would share.

Lofty  :)

That's a bit poor at those kms.  :disapp:
My FD did 136,000 kms before I sold it and the hatch struts were still good as new.
How's the missus?

I have a similar problem. When clsoing the hatch there is enough resistance, but when opening it, it opens to fast, so when the hatch reaches the point of maximal opening, theres a strange noise and a shaking, because the hatch isn't braked enough.

I noticed it maybe 2 weeks ago for the first time.  Usage is quite seldom.

That's an early failure.  Should be covered by warranty.  Mine are OK after 5 and a half years.

(A few years ago I was talking to a taxi operator, who had a Hiace van for wheelchair passengers, and he said that  the tailgate had broken, presumably after being opened/closed many, many times.)

Ours are well balanced and fine. An easy warranty replacement.

Yep, misses is ok... more shock than anything. It wasn't an emediate failure 100%. It was probably 50% resistance when she was donked. A day or two later there was zero resistance. There's a bit of weight in those hatches. Real pain trying to get stuff in and out of the boot whilst holding the hatch up with one arm... lol.  I'm sure they'll sort in a couple of weeks when it gets serviced. :)

Get a length of wood. 2by2 or better if slightly wider but not too wide.

Open hatch then place wood in a safe position to make a prop to keep hatch open.

Measure wood to length and cut surplus off.

When using hatch you can place wood/prop to keep open.

Hey presto instant  carma

Or, take same piece of wood and hit your missus over the head with it.
Saves your hatch having to do it.

I did that with the Renault Fuego for many years. :goodjob:

Just don't take Dave's option of hitting the missus over the head with your wood  :whistler:

Scratching head in disbelief.  Booked the car in for a service and mentioned the rear gas struts had failed. (3 weeks ago). Turned up this morning for the service etc, but they said I would need to come back in two weeks to get them replaced as they didn't have the part and they had to get it from sydney!

When I asked why they didn't order it well before, the answer was ' that any warranty issue needs to be inspected before any further action is taken... sorry, it's Hyundai policy'.

Unreal..so now I have to burn another morning of my time.

Gotta wonder sometimes.

While it's a pain in the butt, I do understand why they do that.....If they order the parts in and then find it's not a warranty issue then they are stuck with the parts.

I had the same response the other day when I took my car in for them to inspect the chrome on the passenger side door handle.
I said, while you're ordering, my girlfriend's i30 has the same problem, can you order a couple extra....the answer was the same as what you got told, she would need to have her car inspected first.  :undecided:
