Title: 2012 i30 Petrol Timing Belt Replacement
Post by: bluest on May 03, 2019, 09:44:04
Hello

When I enter these forums, I never know which section to post my queries, so applogies if I've posted in wrong area.

I have a 2012 i30 petrol 5 door Trophy which has around 75k on the odometer. My owners manual tells me it's about due for a timing belt replacement.

I've briefly scanned the forum for some help, but to know avail

I've purchased the belt from the dealer, now I'm looking for a how-to-guide which will show me the steps needed.

Thank you

Are you feeling lucky? Is this something you've done before, ever?

Just asking because a timing belt replacement is one of those critical maintenance tasks that if you do it wrong or goes wrong worst case scenario valves and pistons meet and you get a new engine.

Other things to consider are the auxiliary items like belt tensioners and pulleys/bearings etc that in a perfect world you would replace always every time you did the belt. On some vehicles the water pump is driven also by the timing belt, so some may replace that at the same time or sometimes every 2nd time.

Also is this FD or GD series, what motor is it?

I'm not familiar with the Hyundai petrol, I've done a few V6 Mitsubishis and a shitty 2003 Holden Astra which has issues with belts and pumps.

Also, and this is pedantic. I always did cam shaft and crankshaft seals too at the same time, whilst in there it's good practice. But they may last for some time yet without leaking.

some of the other items. Looks like it's a spring loaded tensioner

Thanks for quick response.

Yes I have replaced cam belts on my Lotus Twin Cam many years ago, thanks for the heads up though.

Its a 2 litre, not sure about FD or GD but the dealer gave me the cam kit listed against the VIN.

Are you aware of a how-to-guide in this forum

Thanks

Just helps so I know where to look.

Not sure if I've seen a guide, but I may be able to piece enough info out of a manual.

Lotus twin cam sounds like a good pre-req

If it's a G4GC motor, this is from the FD manual.

...it's definitely a Fd model, but not sure about the motor G4GC number

Then the info I've linked should be helpful then.

Thank you.

Is there a belt tension deflection dimension I need to be aware of after the new belt is installed.

An FD belt should be  inspected and replaced at 90,ooo km if the car has been worked hard. Normally, 120k from memory. You are a bit early/

have you downloaded the procedures.  Note there's 2 depending on build date

...thanks nzenigma, yes I'm a bit early, I thought I would get all the parts and guides and study them before embarking on the replacement.  :D

..if you're referring to the procedures, where would I find those tw2005, unless of course they were in the link you sent me. I could not find anything in those documents which referred to deflection, unless of course the tensioner automatically tensions.

you're right there is not, the tensioner is self adjusting and it tells you what the initial setup procedure of the tensioner and belt is. That is the factory procedure in those pages

Thank you.

Has anyone in this forum changed a belt? Any experiences you would like to share.

Yes Ive done quite a few, thats also why I knew that you dont need to do it yet.
If you really have done a lotus belt, nothing I can add.
Gerard has given you more than enough information to proceed.
Given that effort, I hope this isnt another wind up.
