Hello from Parramatta.
I am not yet a Hyundai owner, but hope to be by the end of the year.
I've been using the forum to narrow down my new car choice, and have just test drove the i30 Tourer.  Lovely car to drive, even though it was an automatic.
Still debating petrol or diesel though.
Thank you for all the informative postings on this forum.

Yes welcome Aviator 2b,

If you regularly do long distance driving, say > 20 k's the Diesel would be an option. For short journeys then petrol is better. Remember though, over the lifetime of the vehicle your journey requirement may change. The diesel is dearer to purchase usually, depending on what deal you can negotiate. I highly recommend you have a decent test drive of both motors at least 1 hour, varying conditions so you can get a feel for the engines. Not sure if you've driven Diesel's before, but it is a different type of driving style.

BTW, you don't happen to currently be driving a Ford Mustang at all

Thankyou for the welcome and info, Phil.

No Ford, only a Toyota Camry.
I was looking at diesel as I drive 80km a day on the freeway, to and from work.  Other than that, it would be relatively local driving.
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who would lend me a diesel car for an hour, and hire cars are mostly petrol.
I'll keep asking for test drives at dealers, and compare their cars though.

It is unreasonable for dealers to expect you to fork out for a diesel car without a decent test drive. When I tested ours, it was a second hand vehicle which was purchased for my daughter, if you can't get a new one, try for a 2nd hand drive at least, that should be quite possible. It's about getting a feel for diesel driving as it is different to petrol, less revs but more torque. 80 ks on a freeway is perfect for diesel.  :D

I do 60 km a day and love my Diesel. Did I mention I'm getting 4.1 L/100Km. Maybe I have.

Welcome to the forum.  :goodjob2:
As the others have said, it depends on your sort of driving.
But if you're commuting that far every day I would suggest taking a long, hard look at the diesel.

Welcome to the club Aviator 2b  :goodjob:

If you can afford the couple of extra thousand go the diesel (you will redeem some of the extra at trade in time) :happydance:

Thank you everyone, for the warm welcome.

Can I just ask, what are the differences between driving a diesel compared to a petrol car?
I'm a diehard manual driver, and too old to be hoon, so I guess I'm just a regular driver.

Thank you.

Basically the petrol motor feels quite lively, but the torque of the diesel feels like you are diving a V6 (particularly up hills) very linear acceleration and effortless climbing and overtaking

Diesel engines rev a lot lower and produce most of their motive force (torque) at quite low revs. I drive on freeways too and in the auto at 110 kmh the engine is at 2300 to 2400 hundred rpm (from memory)?. At these revs, hill climbing is easily handled without the need to change down gears at all. A litre of diesel contains more energy than a litre of petrol, so your car will use less and drive further per tank, which is good. For me, diesels are like a truck and love to pull hard which is good for towing. If you're a spirited driver that likes to use the full range of the engine, then petrol would suit better. You have indicated that this is not the case so I think Diesel for you would be a great choice. We have 2 diesel i30's in our household.  :goodjob2:

If you prefer to drive a manual (like me) and you are not a hoon (like me) then I really think that diesel ownership might be for you.
But you do need to test drive both petrol and diesel over an extended distance to see what works best for you.
Diesels are just nicer to drive (in my opinion) providing you're not revving the guts out of it and redlining in every gear.
They have heaps more torque than a petrol car, are more economical than a petrol car and have a higher resale than a petrol car, so it's reasonable to expect to have to pay more for a new one.
I'm on my second diesel i30 and hadn't owned diesel cars before the first one.

I hadn't.

Welcome,

You drove the Tourer?

I'm jealous......

The diesel sits just over 2500 @ 120 km/h.  Resale is better, so you'll get a reasonable percentage of the purchase price back.

I've never driven a petrol so can't really comment.
