Title: GD i30 Apple Car Play / Android Auto headunit (AU)
Post by: elantraelite on April 09, 2017, 12:33:32
Recently we sold our GD i30 in favour of a new 2017 Santa Fe.

The Active model Santa Fe has the same Apple Car Play / Android Auto headunit as the current GD i30.

Very quickly I noticed the voice quality of the microphone on the unit is awful. The person on the other end of the call gets a dose of loud engine and road noise, along with cutting out.

I took our Santa Fe to Hyundai and noted the problem. I was told by the would be fixed with a software update.

Got the car back, no difference.

The manufacturer of this headunit is Cartronics. I had a nice people from there help me with my FD-01 Headunit what it was having Bluetooth issues and they replaced it free of charge for me when the car was 6 yeas old.

I emailed the same person, in hope they might be able to help.

They were quite helpful and replied with this;

"Thanks for your note.

We have made some improvements to the microphone and associated hardware and software to improve the sound quality for the outside party (far-side) during hands-free phone calls and when using the voice recognition function.

These improvements require replacement of the audio unit by your dealer.

The replacement audios will be available in late April/early May.  An official communication re the above from Hyundai will be released in the next week.

We recommend you contact your dealer in the coming weeks to book an appointment to have the audio replaced under warranty.

All the best"

Given that this is the same unit that the i30 uses, it might be of some help to anyone experiencing issues with their microphone as well.

Will keep you updated on my progress

Howdy, I called my  Hyundai dealership about this today.

They are still waiting on further instruction regarding the new hardware / software update of the headunit.

The tech I spoke to knew the update was coming but thought it was only a software upgrade, not hardware replacement. However, he did say that at this stage it looks like I knew more about the update then he did.

They're expecting a bulletin to be released mid May, which is inline with the information I got from Cartronics.

Today I had the Santa Fe taken in for its 7500km service and made note of the issue with the Bluetooth quality.

I told them that when the car was in for its 1500km serivce that the firmware was updated and that I had spoken to Cartronics regarding the replacement unit being the fix. I picked up the car and it has been confirmed that an updated new headunit will be installed to solve the problem.

I've been told they will let me know when it arrives for the swap over.

I'd suggest anyone with the GD Android Auto headunit who is having issues with the Bluetooth quality to speak to your dealer. Behind the counter they had a mountain of parcels delivered from Cartronics, which to me suggests replacement is the only way to fix the issue.

Will keep you posted on how the new headunit goes

Yep made note of that as well and returned with it being normal operation. They said to continue to monitor it and let them know if anything changes to when I go in for the headunit to be replaced.

They were quite helpful, so I'm happy to just make note of any changes.

On another note, I have emailed Cartronics to confirm if the hardware replacement is also is fix for the GD i30's Car Play headunit also.

Good news! And confirmed the i30 unit can be replaced with an improved unit!

See the response below:

"Yes, the i30 microphone performance has also been improved and is available now.  Your dealer can order a replacement audio for you"

Does anyone know what year models will be covered ?  I'm guessing only the most recent.  Would love Apple car play in my i30 SR.

If it has the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto Headunit only. Only models with the 7" display. I didn't ask about any other models.

Thanks.  I just missed out on the upgrade to Car Play for existing owners that didn't have it so guessed it would be the same  :'(

Getting the new Headunit installed in our Santa Fe on Thursday. I saw the updated unit in a Santa Fe on the car yard and it's got a larger hole for the microphone... Guess that's the hardware side of it sorted... Finger crossed it fixes the issue.

Got the headunit changed over this week and it has definitely made an improvement. No more road noise on the other end and doesn't cut out anymore. Still not as clear as the GD with the factory sat nav and mic on the roof, but a massive improvement over the existing unit.

Cheers for that, the PD hands free seems very clear and crisp (tested it yesterday)

I was pretty confident the PD would be ok. Anything with a headunit from Hyundai Korea is good. It's these Cartronics units that they use that are a bit hit and miss with the Bluetooth. Other than that they are heaps better than the Nav unit in the GD
