Over the past few months I've noticed that the on board readout for MPG seems to show its highest at around 65 mph.

At 70 it goes down slightly but at say 55 it goes down more.

So although I've always taken 55 to be the best constant speed, something I remember from many many years ago, in my diesel, 65 seems to be the best speed for economy.

Anyone else got views?

I stick to around 67mph (based on GPS, not speedo) on the motorways. Maybe a few mph either way but it seems better for the traffic conditions if I "keep up" with the slower drivers.

At that motorway speed my readout was showing around 56mpg recently (I reset around every 7000 miles) but I reset last week and it's showing just under 58mpg (400 miles since reset). I guess the 3 miles each side of the daily motorway journey are bringing it down from optimum.

Today I was behind a lorry and there was a little sticker which read:

This vehicle is regulated to a Maximum of 53 mph for optimum fuel consumption

This is the first time I've seen this wording as what I've seen is Max speed of vehicle is ?? MPH or similar
