My 2010 CRDI hatch went in for its 37500km service (yes I have done all the extra 7500km extras) and at the time I reported a rattle in the right hand front suspension. I had recently replaced all the tyres as they had worn on the inside despite numerous wheel alignments. Given that the car had been to suspension specialists and another dealer for these alignments, and I had mentioned the knocking, I presumed they might have had a general check for play in various components.
Anyway, when I collected my car the service advisor indicated they had raised a warranty work order to replace the steering rack. Apparently there was excessive clearance in the bush that is part of the rack housing on the drivers side and this was the reason for my knock. I went home and raised the vehicle and could physically create toe variations...... more than likely this is why my car has devoured its front tyres, the alignment would be set without any rolling resistance load on the rack, once driving the toe setting would move to more toe out and hence my unexplained wear....
Obviously the technicians that did the alignments weren't planning on there being wear in the front end of a car with such low mileage...
Even better is the fact that for the first time ever the car's steering has some feel, it isn't anywhere near as 'woolly"near straight ahead and is probably acceptable to drive at last. The lack of knocking is just an aesthetic bonus as far as I'm concerned.

That's both disappointing and good at the same time. :D

I had mine replaced very early on for a "rattle" that I first noticed when I ventured onto some corrugated road. I was doing about 10kmh and it sounded like the front suspension was going to fall off. Quite frankly, it was so frightening that I haven't been game to go back there to see if they fixed it. Like you, I noticed it did steer a little better.

Difficult to know why some suffer this fault, seems that more Euro registered cars seem afflicted, maybe the cobblestone pavement.....
My car has done a reasonable amount of dirt road driving, that may have contributed, but it looks like some leave the factory with excess play.
Hyundai have obviously encountered these claims regularly, no questions about whether or not it would be covered by warranty, my dealer had done them before and plenty of replacement racks in stock......

you could possibly say you want re numeration for your tyres, well it was the faulty steering rack that chewed them out prematurely.

steering rack on our developed a clunk at 12 700 kms and was replaced at 16 000 kms

Mine's had a "click-clack" noise when turning the wheel side-to-side since near to new. I believe it's the UJ on the column but disappointingly I've had no luck with getting it repaired. "They all do it" is all I get.

thats what ours did/is doing. last time the rack was replaced it went away for about 25 000 k's and the rack felt heaps different, more resistance/feed back from the road. now the click/clunk is coming back.  :faint:

There is more than one cause of noise from the steering which I suspect makes diagnosis more difficult. There was a TSB for some sort of "collar" that had excessive play as well.
