Hi all,

I have recently purchased a 2008 Hyundai i30 SLX Diesel and i have noticed that there is a really bad steering clunk noise when turning from left to right rapidly. I'm thinking it might be the universal joints in the steering column, any idea's anyone??

Much appreciated.

Very hard to diagnose sounds on a forum.

I would suggest raising the car safely on stands, then checking the wheels are on firmly then all suspension components for looseness or wear. Grab each wheel at 9 & 3 o'clock and try to steer it left & right. It should remain solid, likewise 12 & 6 o'clock and test again, it should not have any looseness or play. Hold the wheel and have someone turn the steering wheel (unlocked, of course) and see if you can hear the noise. You haven't mentioned how far it's traveled, so turn the wheels full right and spin the wheel to check the CV joints. If they click they need replacing, do a similar test at full left position.

What Phil said plus check your steering column uni joint bolts are tight. 32nm is the spec.
Do you feel the noise in the steering wheel?

It was this kind of behaviour that made me check & replace my front droplinks - both of which were worn (nearside more so).

Administrator Comment Mr Shambles is referring to his previous 2008 crdi, not his current car...

It does sound like drop links (aka, anti roll bar links/sway bar links/stabiliser bar links).
Take the front wheel off and give them a good shake and you will hear your click.
