I went for a drive with a friend yesterday down to Busselton (where Dazz and I went when he was over here) and ended up buying another motorbike to keep my Honda CB400 company on those long, lonely nights in the garage.
It's a 1990 Honda ST1100 (Pan European to our British friends).
It's done 187,000 kms in its twenty six years and is actually only the 45th ST1100 ever built, which appealed to me being a lover of classic stuff. It still has its original engine and is being delivered tomorrow.
I took it for a spin and it's a really nice ride. One of the original carb (not fuel injected) models.

Yes, they're a highly regarded bike.
As far as I'm aware though, there's no such animal as a 1989 model.

Nice bike Dave, a good model they were and handle well :goodjob2:

Glad you bought the right one, the 1300 released a couple of years later were an absolute bucket of crap.

Interesting you say that.
I've read similar but then I've also spoken to some very happy owners.
I know the ST1300 had issues with high speed wobbles, but I wouldn't go that fast anyway.
Ex police St1300s are going for $4500 - $5000 at auction over here, with 70-110,000 kms.
The ST1100 ran from 1990 to 2002 and the ST1300 from 2002 onwards.

Even at hwy/freeway speeds the 13's would get a wobble when you backed off the throttle, the 1100 was a better engine too.

I'm a fan of the ST1300 as you know, Dave and I'd have one tomorrow if I had the cash and they were still available new...
From what I recall, the optional topbox seemed to be the culprit for the high speed weave...

As for being a bucket of crap...Hmm, It couldn't have been too bad as they only stopped building them a year or two back and they are still using the engine in the CTX1300....  :undecided:

Guess what?
They're still available new.
A dealership in Queensland has managed to find some brand new (still in crates) ST1300s that were ordered by Qld Police and are no longer required.
$18,000 ride away with Police single seat, $19,000 ride away with dual seat.
Available in any colour you like, as long as you like white.  :)

Later models had the frame redesigned and fuel injection added, early models were a bucket of crap :D

Being a lover of all things classic (which is why I bought an early build ST1100), I would also like to buy (when the time is right) a very early build 2002 (non-ABS) ST1300 as well.
All of the 2002 models sold in Australia were red in colour.
I looked at a couple or three last year and there were some very, very low km examples around (like 8,000 kms!!!) but the time wasn't right for me (read: not enough spare money  :D). They were all in the eastern states which adds considerably to the purchase cost.
But I would be very interested in adding another such Honda to the collection if the right bike comes up in the next year or two.  :)
Then, I wouldn't mind some earlier 1970/80s examples of Hondas as well, such as the 550/4, K7 750, 900 Bol d'Or, etc.
I do enjoy collecting.

If you like the classics Dave why not get yourself an old Bonnie 750 or a BSA, a long time family friend just recently sold ( virtually gave away ) his Triumph triple :crazy2: and my cousin has also just sold my deceased uncle's Indian Chief, a beautiful bike that my father and myself are absolutely fuming over for not being told about  :TutTut:

Well, it goes back to my youth Craig, and what I relate to.
I was in my teens in the seventies and sort of relate to those bikes more, although I do like the older ones that were around in your youth.   :)

If I'd come home with a Jap bike in my teens the old man would have kicked me out :D spent most of my days belting around on the Jawa or the Matchless.

The Suzuki I just gave too the old man is the first Jap bike he's ever had, he rode it out of necessity and grew to love it though he'd still be hard pressed to ever admit it :winker:

Craig you can often solve those problems, i think thats the Blackbird?

Please excuse!! just checked thats the v4, the blackbird is a straight 4 chain drive.  if i could i would own one of every MC i love them!! a Triumph t120 ( new model 1200 twin ) or a Ducati Monster 1200, could be my next bike, a friend that lives up the road is just getting back into MC's, has had me looking at new bikes with him for the past few months. now buying a Triumph & getting me to ride it over 200k home, so i might fall in love with it.  I've been thinking about Ducati a while then a good friend who owns a lot of bikes just bought one has offered me a ride when i get up Sydney. ( ducati service costs  ) so Triumph might move in with my old tube frame carb Buell  ( i had the Buell on dynojet 250i made 94HP rear wheel 84 FTpound Torque at under 6,000rpm & took 4 seconds to get there ) love that ugly ol Buell!!

Mm, I don't know what the carbs are actually.   :undecided:
It is a few kays but these engines are pretty good for 300,000 kms if serviced properly.
And at the end of the day, if a rebuild is necessary to get another 300,000 out of it, so be it.

Very True Dave! i would expect that motor to use car type big end bearings  so if new parts easy to buy, could do a full rebuild. & they are water cooled. i would expect they would use a Keinin CV Carbs, i love those carbs as when tuned right they are hard to beat, my 1200 Buell has one, they way the Buell & Harley intake manifold set up with one carb between two cylinders, the CV works similar to an old red Holden straight 6 with triple SU carb's, but the CV adjusts to elevation , the old SU did not so had to play with tune more. but can't beat them as they keep the velocity up even when you give them full throttle at low rev's.
