Hi all , can any of you UK members tell me a good brand of English Beer thank you.
As this coming weekend i'm going down to visit my Good friend that live down the south coast and they come from UK. i would like to surprise them by taking some UK beer down. just i know next to nothing about your beer, i think i have drank some about once in my life. it is not common to see it here in Australia but i know a bottle shop that sells beer from UK. Could you tell me a few good brew's thanks in advance.

I am not from the UK lakes but can assure you, There are no good English beers.

Only joking. My favourite that  I know you can get here is Newcastle Brown Ale. Will be interesting to see what our UK M8's make of this verdict.

And no.......we don't drink Fosters in OZ..YUK!

It's a bit of a mix over here, and very much depends on the individuals taste.

For example Newky Brown either slips down the neck or makes you sick. Not to everyone's taste. Same with the specialist bottles like "Speckled Hen", "Owd Roger", "Woodford's Head Cracker", "Old Peculiar". They either make you ill, or drunk.

Half the population here prefer lager, and mostly out of tins when at home. I'm a wine consumer myself, but I do know that Fosters, Tennents, San Miguel etc go down quite nicely.

Hi Lakes,

I'm what you'll call a northern bitter man.
Can't stomach lager as it "just goes thro me"!

John Smiths bitter or smooth is the 1 for me.

If you get Tennants, scottish brew, in cans or bottles they seem good and travel well.

I'd look for beers with an ALC content of around 4% to 5% as over that they tend to be too sweet and unless you cool really well can be sweet in taste and leave a "bad/sour" taste in your mouth.

If you have time before you visit post list what's available and I'll give my opinon, for what its worth.

Hi Lakes

If you like a draught beer/lager I think Boddingtons is pretty good.

It is always worth "chasing" that with a couple of nice wee drams though, personal recommendations would be Highland Park single malt which is very smooth or for a more peaty, heat your entire body try a Talisker. ;)

For a particularly wild night try a "Depth Charge", one nip of whisky in a glass dropped in it's entirety into a pint of lager!!

Happy drinking

Depth charge round here is a shot of brandy dunked into a lager.

The Newcastle Ale was $10+ for a small bottle. so i think i'll get a few six packs of James Squire as they make some nice brews and will only cost less than $40 to get the effect Daz said a good beer should
Thanks all  and i learn something new so thats great.
cheers

Eye30 wrote Why ruin the whisky!!!

This is a legitimate way of making both lager and cheap blended whisky more palatable, it should never be attempted with a single malt which is something you should drink with no additions whatsoever!!

Similarly I guess that the Manchester version does not use Courvoisier

Cheers...........hic

Now we are talking beers, something I am maybe even more passionate about than i30's.
The best thing to come out of Tassie (except Dazz of course) is Cascade Special Stout.
Its even better than Guinness which is really saying somthing.

Cascade Premium Light (Beer) is also a tasty and popular brew....

On that Dazz I agree.

I am generally not a big fan of light beers, but the cascade premium light is far and away the best I have tasted. It has the full flavour of a full strength lager with a nice crisp hoppy finish. :D

I like the Boy... We'll share a few one day I'm sure.

Going to Darwin for a Wedding in October. Was tempted to detour home via Canberra but might be better to come over with the car early next year and "do the rounds"

Dawrin via Canberra, that is some detour!
Would love to share a cascade with you someday. If your real brave, you could sample one of my home brews, second best stout around. Well that opinion anyway. :D

I'm not supposed to drink any more (doctor's orders)

But I don't drink any less either (an oldie but a goodie)

Yeah I'd like to try your home brew.

P.S. Looked into the cost of freight for my Sports exhaust to Canberra or Adelaide* regions ($100 plus!!! - so guess I'll just have keep it)

*One of our members over there was a bit interested.
