It turns out he was attacked by two sharks, one on each arm.
He swam over a hundred metres to safety and was lucky that there was a volunteer paramedic on the beach at the time.
He was conscious the whole time.

I agree, Rick.  When I surf, I know that I am in other creatures domains.  I've told my family that if I am taken, don't go after the shark.  If you are willing to take the risk, then you must be able to accept the consequences.

I agree with Rick-p. The area is known for it's shark numbers, so it is inevitable, someone is going to get hurt. Sharks are frenzied attackers, so not surprising that 2 were involved, really.

I have not been in the sea since I witnessed just a smallish shark attack at Maslins in SA when I was 17,luckily for the sharks intended meal,it was one bite and it left,luckily the bloke would only have severe scaring to his upper leg
