5C, gusting up to 100mph winds and bucketing rain

I feel for our ski centres, years of short (if any) seasons, we get enough snow to ski on and the bloody roads to get to them are all blocked.  The main centre at Cairngorms cleared their roads on Thursday to find that the wind had drifted and reblocked on Thursday night, worked all day yesterday and got clear again for the winds to pick up even further last night and block their access again.  By the time the road is open the snow will be gone

South-Western Finland 6:30 AM, temperature -7°C and misty rain. Water coming down freezes immediately when it hits ground, your car and your windscreen. Extremely dangerous weather to drive, lots of crashes and flashing blue lights along my way to work. Not a day-off for Finns, though...

We have been all over Tassie in the last few days... and it has been beautiful weather (Between about 12c at night and mid twenties during the day) Before we became rain water only at home I would have been delighted but we need some rain.. It has now been about 6 weeks since we have had even a good sprinkle

Visited Manchester-Leeds area on thursday and friday. The weather was like a cow's breath, moist and warm (+3°C at that time). Occasionally, the air smelled like that, too.

There were only few patches of snow around - well, I will accept that as an evidence that they've had some. But I had more powder snow on top of my car last night when I came back than they had in whole Yorkshire.

The scenery was very nice and green, something that I would expect to see here (Finland) in May. I've got -13°C at the moment and need to clean the snow off my yard and driveway again... blaaaahh...

Yes, it is all relative... The part in this theory of relativity which I do not understand is that the Brits kept whining about cold weather all the time - and at the same time they (especially the young ones) were walking around the streets in t-shirts and miniskirts.

Yeah that is common in the cities, the problem is that the nightclubs tend to lose your jacket if you put one in to the locker room, so it is easier and cheaper just not to wear one

With regards to the cold and Brits "whining" about it lets be fair, Scotland reached -21C regularly at the beginning of the year, for us who normally sit in the Gulf Stream, that is cold.

The problem that particularly our English friends have in snow is that due to them not getting it THAT often in real terms the local government don't set themselves up to deal with it when it does come (and we can get heavy snow in this country, I have seen the snowbanks over the roof of my car) the whole country comes to a standstill, if our councils would actually spend a little money and not just proclaim every snow storm "freak weather" , we would be much better off.

An example of this was Aberdeen City Council (who are in dire financial problems) reducing our gritting lorries from 16 to 7 in October 2009 "because we don't get much snow", you can imagine how much pressure that put on the existing road crews in recent weeks, with the council once again saying they were "caught by surprise" and that the "freak snow and cold is caused by climate change"

Remember Finland is set up to deal with snowy, cold weather because they expect it.

Point taken - I usually talk to people in Yorkshire area, maybe it is just them making noise of nothing. Funny thing is that when they come to visit us, the temperature is not an issue as they come almost properly clothed. Some have an issue with ice and snow being slippery because of not having proper footwear...

To add something to the "theory of relativity", temperature of -21°C has different chilling effect depending on the place you live. For instance, -21°C in Lapland does not feel that cold at all because of low air humidity. Coming down to south-coast of Finland will make the same temperature feel much, much colder as the air humidity rises when coming closer to the sea.

So, to me it is easy to believe that -21°C in Scotland must have been freezing. Add some wind to it and people daring to go outside will turn to icy statues.

I am currently watching a programme on Channel 4 about why we have had this weather and the presenter is in Scotland's Cairngorm Mountains.  This area regularly gets -20C and lower but is usually accompanied by up to 100mph winds and according to the programme the windchill with those numbers is equivalent to -70C. 

He was filming a piece with the mountain rescue doctor who showed him the speed and effects of hypothermia, the presenter managed 8 minutes without his scarf, gloves and jacket before the doctor had to start treatment
