Bigger Brakes

Hello,
Anyone knows if there is any stock brake upgrade? (Ex: Santafe on the i30).

The only upgrade I know is this:

Any other options?

in my opinion the i30 has excellent brakes stock standard.

but if i was to upgrade them i would fit drilled and slotted rotors,high metal content pads and change the fluid to a high boiling point brake fluid.

I'm not sure of any particular sites to by the parts your after though sorry. but k-spec looks like a great place to start looking.

I did think of painting my calipers post office red... i.e. a poor mans upgrade HA hahahaha ha hahaaaaa. and sticking a label on somewhere which would say, ceramic disks fitted

Decided it was too much bother really...

I have the complete oposite opinion... The stock brakes suck!

They heat up pretty quickly and have brake fade.
I have better pads (EBC Greenstuff), but it's time to change the discs... I'm thinking about improving also the calipers, if it was someghin plug&play...

Never had a problem with ours, supposed to be able to tow 1400 kg, so they can't be that bad. How do you drive your car to heat them up so much, are you racing

All original brakes in mine and still good

When I used to drive a Falcon, I was constantly having to skim rotors, replace rotors, skim rotors, replace rotors.
They used to warp constantly.
No such issues with the i30 though.

But then I try not to use them too much.

We have a 400m vertical downward gradient into Adelaide and the diesel has virtually no engine braking. I turn on the air cond to apply braking effect and keep it lubricated, yet I still have to dab the brakes to keep the car under the limits through our tunnels. They feel reassuring every time.

The EL was excellent on the brakes, I think I replaced the rotors early on because of the hard pads that were on it when I got it. But did 140k without anything but pad replacement.

The BA has shudder that sees it get a skim on the rotors nearly every service. I am told the wheel nuts need to be done up to the right torque, but can't find any mechanics that are aware of it (perhaps because it takes more effort).

The I30 is 50k old and I haven't even changed the pads.

Have to agree with 84....

We use our i30 to tow our 1400 kg caravan all the way from DK to Croatia, that's through the alps with the car at max weight 1800 kg + 1400 kg = 3200 kg in total, up and down the mountains.

We have no issues with the brakes.

Rarely use my brakes either, TBH I'd suspect this to be a request for help with a visual mod... the i30 has awesome brakes, never once have I felt I needed more resilience against fade or any more "grab". Retardation is exactly as I want it, overbraking can be lethal, especially under emergency conditions, in the wet....

NO, I'm pretty sure the car is the same length after the trip. Haven't noticed that the boot have increased in size since the trip..

I wouldn't want a dual axle anyway. The caravan is only 7,25 meter in total. It's 20 years ago they made these size caravans with dual axles.

Today you have to go beyond 1800 kg before they are dual axle.

DBA do brake rotors if you really want to have some eye-popping brakes. They have a couple of models, eg: Slotted, slotted and cross-drilled or just replacement. Add some decent pads and you would certainly notice a difference.

I'm not fond of cross drilled because they can fracture if you hit cold water, but that's just a personal thing.

Yes the car is a Pro_Ceed, manual gearbox (and yes, I do brake with the gearbox), and I'm from Portugal that is a warm country.

I don't understand how you say the brakes are good, have you tried braking from 160Km/h to like... 40? From 160 to 80 it will brake, but then it will slowly slow down...
Compared to other similar sized cars i usually drive (Seat Leon, Renault Megane, Opel Astra), I found the stock brakes were pretty mediocre. With the EBC brake pads they got A LOT better, better bite and more importantly no more heat fade.

Use of car... I drive daily, and I do some trackdays with it. The car handles them well, but the rotors not so much (they get micro cracks).

I don't want the drilled.... I would like normal plain ones, preferably from a model within the group (like the santa fé, or IX35, Sorento,...)

But even for road use they are not that good... like I've said, if are going fast and you have to do an emergency hard brake... they will not stop you, they will sssslllloooowwww yyyooouuu dddooowwwnnn...

If you do brake fast from let's say 180 km/h to 60 km/h, they do tend to lose on the "strength" (which is expected from "stock cars" I guess?) But I haven't tried that kind of hardcore braking with many cars. I just know that i30's brakes are much better then the ones in the Santa Fe. It's like having i30's brakes in the Santa Fe if you ask me... I'm saying that because we own a Santa Fe and I did quite a lot of km with it.

So..if you are thinking about putting in Santa Fe's brakes..don't

PS: What kind of wheels do you have? I'm asking that because of the cooling?

Note, you could go all out and put floating disks, race pads etc etc etc, but if you have hard tyres you won't brake a whole lot better. A lot of people forget that a simple upgrade in braking can be achieved with softer tyres. However the obvious trade off is low mileage out of the tyres.

A mate of mine spent about $3k on some fancy brakes for his toyota. (He retained his Michelin Energy tyres) We went to Goulburn for a ride day and wondered why I could out-brake him on a regular basis. (I changed my wheels and put Yoko Advan tyres, standard brakes) Simply put, I had more grip with my tyres.
