A recent Jax Tyres catalogue in Melbourne had the EP100 175/65R14 82H for $109; EP100 195/65R15 91H for $145; EP100 205/65R15 95H for $111.

Why the $145 for the 195/65R15?

Why the $145 for the 195/65R15?
A couple of things have a bearing on price apart from the materials and labour which go into tyres.
One is volume and that's the main reason the 205 is about the same price as the 175.
The 195 is probably sold in less numbers. So B/S makes less.
The second thing is that, for some reason, Australia (or Jax) may have found a super cheap source for those two sizes but can't get the same deal on the 195. So they've got pleny of 175s and 205s to sell but not so many 195s.

I don't know enough about tyres to decide to use a larger size.

Ah the good old days when I had 235/45 Firestones on standard 14in rims on the VH Commodore!  :D
They aquaplaned like crazy in heavy wet but they were flush with the guards and looked awesome  :happydance:

As the SLX runs 205's I can't see there being any issue other than your speedo will be out by around 2% which will probably mean it's spot on.... :D

I wouldn't recommend it.

Why is that, Trev?  :undecided:

I'm guessing because we are talking 15" wheels (probably 5.5" wide) Not 16 x 6 like on the SLX  :whistler:

I'd much prefer the look of excess width 'fats' than that stupid low profile underdone look driven by young broke drivers who overestimated their wallet contents on rim specs and can't find tyres to match

I'm well aware of the rim sizes, Daz.... :)

But with the 65 profile they will be pretty close to standard in diameter as I stated earlier.
And as for the rim width, I'm pretty sure the 205's will fit 5.5" rims......

I do think it would be helpful to know WHY Trev doesn't recommend them though....  :whistler:

There's $136 in it. That's a lot of coin for less rubber.

But if they don't cut the mustard they don't cut it.

Dazz, the difference in OD is 13 mm. The maximum legal is 15 mm. So you are right at the top end of what is acceptable.
The 205/65R15 tyre has a different "design rim" fitment to a 195/65R15. The "design rim" is the exact rim size for which the tyre size is best suited. The rim range for the 195 is 5.5 -7.0. For the 205 it's 5.5 to7.5 (working from memory here but I'm pretty sure that's right.
The 205 will be floaty and give a wishywashy ride.
It's a tyre designed for a Falcon or Commodore or Camry. That should be enough of an alarm bell.

If its good enough for a Camry, its no where near good enough for a Hyundai  :happydance:

Though they would be old models, not many being produced with 15" rims now.....

So the 205's do fit the 5.5" rims then....  :goodjob:

Ok, I'm confused, if they are fitted to a rim which is within the "recommended" width then why would they give a floaty and wishy washy ride?  :undecided:

The 206/65R15 in its heyday represented pretty much 70% of total car tyre production. As you say, the cars it fitted are getting older now so the price point also drops as owners of those cars are more likely to look for a bargain.
