iI have just purchased a I30 cw Trophy edition. This model comes with all the cruise control buttons on one side of the steering wheel.
On the other side is a blank plate where volume controls will fit. I was wondering does anyone have diagrams on volume controls and can i just hook up volume controls where the existing blank plate is ? it is the basic car stereo for an i30.

any input or ideas are appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

It is not an easy job I'm afraid a lot of talk on here (feel free to use the search function above) but not much joy I'm afraid..It is not as easy as plug and play and if you dismantle the steering wheel for a look be VERY careful of the airbag..

give with one hand and take with the other.

That's how they can keep price down by taking out little odds and sods.

why do they call that model a Trophy?

I'm guessing they came up with that name because of all the awards the i30 has won john

Like snowcherry I didn't realise it was the SX tarted up with alloys and cruise etc..for only $500 more - not bad  :D

Ok i finally bit the bullet.
I have obtained all the parts necessary to add the volume control.(i hope)

The hyundai dealer is fitting it all for $220.00 labour only. im not stuffing around with an airbag.
I will get photos of the airbag off so i can post them here and hopefully help someone else out.
Its being fitted tomorrow so i hope it all works out ?

I have done alot of research and its apparent people have added volume controls before so here is all the info and photo,s i have on the topic so far.

I hope all these photos turn out as i have never used this PHOTOBUCKET thingy before.

This is the volume module. $59.95 US including air freight from Korean auto imports in america, but the part was shipped(16 days from ordering) direct from Korea.
This part was $177.00 AUS dollars here from Hyundai Parts.

Rear of Volume Module shown.

This is a picture of the wiring loom required for the volume module and also showing it connected.
This part was from Hyundai Parts for $45.00 AUS

So Parts numbers are as follows.
96700 2L2004X steering wheel volume module $177 AUD from hyundai australia or $59.00 USD from KAI including $9.95 airfreight.
56190 2L300 Wiring loom for volume module $45.00 hyundai australia.

Tomorrow i find out if it all works ???

Interested to see how you go. I understand that the SX in OZ has a different clock spring (air bag thing) that doesn't allow use of the stereo controls...

Don't understand that. I could have specified steering wheel controls on my SX if I wanted to wait and not take one off the yard.

Volume Control 100% working.
Happy and well worth the dollars.
brown and blue wires in left plug, horn only function.

right side plug cruise/volume function.

According to Hyundai Dealer any I30 can be fitted with cruise/volume controls(right side plug) (australia) because steering clock springs are all identical.
another photo from my steering wheel in pieces.

The part numbers i have stated here are correct for volume module only.
I have cruise control as well therefore i had the wrong wiring loom for this plug. The hyundai dealer worked out the correct pinout for the right side plug and added volume all into one plug.

Any questions please ask i will try my best.

the final quest !!!!!!!!!!!!

umbro the buttons are fully illuminated just like factory fitted! LED,s are internally fitted in the volume module.

Dazzler full functionality is all there everything that factory was designed to do.

Also proves the remote control wires are there all the way from stereo to the clockspring, all you add is the wiring loom and volume module into the steering wheel.

Sorry about the delayed reply and i hope this helps. I am just stoked that its all worked out.
As i said before if i can help anyone else out just drop me a line.  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

man for a bit more you could get some half deacent aftermarket splits! $150 should get you a pretty good pair! then add a small amplifier and bam would sound nice! even with out an amp it would probably sound better than the factory set up!!!

  • Sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma.
Hey Pauly,

Thanks for these great posts...well done. Looks like a no brainer to install, provided the air bag doesn't go off!!

You are obviously very happy with the results and based on your success and satisfaction, I'll be getting this done when I get my 15K service done. I might just pay the Hyundai prices instead of importing the gear from Korea/US.

Thanks for the post- might do the same for mine.  What do you mean when you say the dealer added volume into the one plug- did he take out some terminals and put them into the cruise loom?

As for speakers, i wouldn't bother with factory tweeters- better off using some after-market splits, not only will they have better frequency response, but if you choose carefully they will have higher sensitivity and therefore get better volume with less distortion if not using an amp and only going off head unit.

bobbyd

you can only have one plug into the clockspring. i had the wrong loom so they had to put all the pins (terminals) into one plug.
they pulled the 5 pins from the volume cable plug and fitted it to existing cruise plug in the clockspring.

i actually had the wrong wiring loom.
there are 3 looms available.

1.cruise control only, 1 plug either end

2.volume only, 1 plug either end

3.cruise and volume together. with this loom 1 plug to clockspring and 2 plugs (basically a Y cable) to the vol and cruise modules.

Cheers

Thanks Pauly, yeah i got on to a dealer who has the audio controls for $85 and a y loom to suit so organising that at the moment- thanks for your post, i would have not guessed that the steering control could just be added to non factory optioned so easily.  I assumed the loom from wheel to head unit would also be different.

For anyone else wanting to do the same mod- the loom part number is  561502L500 for cruise and audio

561302L300: audio only
561402L400: cruise only

Further to my last, anyone else wanting to get the audio controls- give Liam at Bunbury Hyundai and Volkswagen a call, he was great and excellent prices.
