Hey Guys,
Just got delivery of my 2018 Hyundai i30 SR Premium!! WOOOO!
But the interior and number plate halogen bulbs are a disappointing yellow (which is weird given the rest of the car has LED lights right!?).
I am in no way experienced with ANYTHING electrically or mechanically technical but am hoping to change the number plate light and interior lights to white LED lights. Given my gross incompetence at any of this stuff I was hoping for some advice :)
NUMBER PLATE LIGHTS
:link: *NEW* MEGA White LED Parking or Number Plate Lights for Hyundai i20 i30 i40 i45 | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-MEGA-White-LED-Parking-or-Number-Plate-Lights-for-Hyundai-i20-i30-i40-i45/272826448481?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649)
These seem to be plug and play -> have I made a prematurely bad purchase or am I right in thinking that its a simple swapout? Have I made the right bulb choice?
INTERIOR LIGHTS
:link: Upgrade Car Interior Set Led Super White Color (8pcs T10 5LED + 4pcs T10 Lens) | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Upgrade-Car-Interior-Set-Led-Super-White-Color-8pcs-T10-5LED-4pcs-T10-Lens/112605163049?fits=Year%3A2017%7CMake%3AHyundai%7CModel%3Ai30&hash=item1a37ca6e29:g:TEMAAOSwYeRZ5WzS)
These also seem to just be a plug and play -> what do you guys think? Now, I have no idea what a canbus is - is that something I need to worry about when it comes to changing the interior lights to LED lights?
In terms of number of LEDs per light and type of LED, these are T10 5 LED 5630 SMD - does that sound appropriate?
Thanks so much for all and any advice!! And thanks for putting up with my ignorance!
-
Congratulations on the new SR Premium :Drive:
LED T10 can be used to replace the W5W type bulbs that are fitted to many of the low-wattage lights in your car. So, your linked examples seem to be right.
However, the interior lights (map, room, vanity, luggage) bulbs are mainly festoon type. Search ebay for "festoon led".
You will need to measure the length of your current festoon bulbs to get the matching LEDs, typically 31mm or 36mm.
-
:iws:
36 will do the dome and boot, 31 will do the sun visors. :victory:
-
You guys are legends! Thanks for the super quick input! I really appreciate it :)
Found the type of lights that the i30 uses in the user's manual which I have attached for everyone's convenience.
I have decided on getting the following LEDs for the interior of the car:
:link: 4x Canbus Error Free 31mm 6 SMD Festoon 5630 LED Car Interior Dome Map Lights OZ | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111446483312)
:link: 4 x 36mm 5630 9 SMD Canbus Festoon LED Car Interior Roof Dome Plate Lights 12V | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121855581154)
REMAINING QUERIES
- Anyone have any further info regarding the canbus and whether or not I need to start learning about it?
- Anyone have info regarding brightness / number of LEDs required / type of LED? (I'm not looking to increase the brightness, just change the quality of the light)
- Do I need to disconnect the battery before doing this? (If so, how do I do that?)
- How do I safely open the housings for the lightbulbs?
Once again please excuse my ignorance!! I'll put up a summary of all the info I learn from this experience so changing lightbulbs will be a simple process for the next person to do this undertaking :)

:welcumwagon: I like your attitude. Appreciative and considerate (you will fit in well).
I thought I was the only Legend around these parts. But I don't know much about swapping to LED globes... :-[ :snigger:
-
Canbus becomes important for high wattage such as exterior illumination but for cabin lighting your eBay cheap stuff (I've found 2 for $1) will do just fine. :goodjob:
As for opening lenses, it's always tense the first time but have patience and find the side and angle that works best for pulling it away from the lining. :victory:
-
There is no need to disconnect the battery. Just ensure that the light is off while changing the bulb. Since the back of the festoon bulbs have a large metal heat sink, there is a minor risk of shorting the socket's terminals while you're plugging them in; This is not an issue if the light is off.
Also, remember that the LEDs have polarity. So, if you plug one in and it doesn't light up, try replugging it rotated 180 degrees.
-
Thanks Tia that's good to know! I could have totally seen myself installing them the wrong way and then spending hours trying to figure out what I'd done wrong! haha :head_butt:
So with relation to removing the lens covers, I have found this in the owner's manual (see picture).
The rear passenger side lights (my car has a moon roof and therefore no central dome light) they say to get removed by an 'authorised Hyundai dealer' and don't provide any info on how to remove them! Can anyone think of why? Or have insight into how I could do this safely myself?
Long thread over something seemingly simple, I know! haha :P

Good thread.
Used a 31mm festoon LED for interior, and T10 LEDs for map reading. I was bit ham fisted when changing my interior festoon and blew fuses twice as inserted LEDs with wrong polarity & then had to turn them 180. :sweating:
-
Hey Crusty thanks!
Oooh blowing a fuse would be annoying! (the mrs is majorly paranoid about me voiding warranty and that would only fuel the fire!)
Any advice on knowing, before putting the LEDs in, which orientation is correct?
And still the query regarding the correct way to remove the rear passenger side light lens - insights?
Thanks team!!
-
I'm sure there is a way for determining polarity with Identiification on LED. Most of my LEDs have been from China so my Chinese is a little rusty. Thee are plenty of spare fuses in panel under driver dash, and they are easy to change if it does go wrong.
As others have said just make sure light is switched off first . It is quite easy to remove fuse using supplied fuse holder tool for interior lighting too, replace led & reinset fuse. Switch on & let there be light. If not repeat process. It won't damage The LED.
Don't do what I did as so excited about new LED I left in permanently switched on overnight :whistler:
As for other query rear passenger light don't have one as just a standard PD SR no sunshine roof
-
Hey, @DeeTee are you still around?
Did you manage to remove the lenses safely?
I'm about to swap out my visor bulbs and don't want to cause any damage.

Hi, can somebody tell me dimensions of interior festoons for i30 GD (2013)?
I want to replace them with LEDs.
So I would appreciate if I will not need risk to brake something twice

I used these in my wife's 2014 GD Tourer.. I assume the hatch would be the same.

I don't have the sun visor mirror lights so I'm not sure about that one but the rest of the interior lights and trunk are 31mm except for the glove box which is T10.
All bulbs should be listed in your owners manual for reference prior to purchasing.

I unscrewed the upper console (having done it a few times to install the reversing camera mirror and dashcam) and note that the map light bulbs are not festoon type. I guess that makes them T10. Is that right? They go in with a half turn of their bases. Should I be looking for the LED on the bulb only or with base included?

@The Gonz T10 are the same base as these Gonz :link: 4X WHITE T10 7020 SMD 10 LED W5W WEDGE TAIL SIDE CAR LIGHTS TURN PARKER BULB | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4X-WHITE-T10-7020-SMD-10-LED-W5W-WEDGE-TAIL-SIDE-CAR-LIGHTS-TURN-PARKER-BULB/222656138025?hash=item33d7570b29) they are one piece so don't pull em apart  the socket they connect to can sometimes need twisting to remove like with park lights but the bulb itself will just pull straight out.
-
The standard T10 (W5W) bulb would be the same as pictured

Thanks, @CraigB . I'm just not confident that I can spot the 'twist lock' shape in the rim of the LEDs pictured on eBay. I might dive back into the ceiling to look at the originals closely again.

Can you take a photo for us to study Gonz? those ebay T10's I posted don't twist, they're exactly the same fitment as the later halogen bulb I pictured which just pull straight out.
-
So here's what I found once I hit on using the term 'T10 twist lock':
:link: 10x Twist Lock T10 168 192 194 Wedge Instrument Panel Dash Light Base Socket YX 648256794191 | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10x-Twist-Lock-T10-168-192-194-Wedge-Instrument-Panel-Dash-Light-Base-Socket-YX/263278428878?epid=18008050512&hash=item3d4c9e02ce:g:ctkAAOSwWflZ7vLR)
which, if they are the correct part, allow me to select from the wide range of T10 LEDs, such as:
:link: 2pcs T10 194 168 2825 5-5050 SMD LED White Super BrUJht Car Lights Lamp Bulb UJ 841983562181 | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2pcs-T10-194-168-2825-5-5050-SMD-LED-White-Super-BrUJht-Car-Lights-Lamp-Bulb-UJ/362377148683?hash=item545f5c790b:g:YvkAAOSwXeJYEHSs)

or the ones you suggested, but that should mean any of these LEDs should plug into the original twist lock sockets, right? :D
-
I see now what you mean, yes all the T10's mentioned will plug into those like normal, they're just a removable base which I've not seen used in Hyundai before.
You'll find those 7020 bulbs I listed far superior in brightness :goodjob2: I've got the same with festoons installed and I've just order another set of them T10's too :)
-
I put some T10s in successfully recently, really liked them. Then later, when it came to the festoons, all was good initially on the centre light but I think I pushed my luck on doing the vanity lights too (even though I never use them) and managed to blow a fuse.
As far as I can tell, while the fuse panel has a number of "SPARE" slots, none of them include the 7.5A fuse for the lights? Or was I just blind?
Unfortunately, despite driving around to Supercheap Auto/Autobarn, it seems to still be a bit difficult to find Micro2 blade 7.5A fuses in Sydney? I've ended up having to order some from eBay and so am without interior lights for a week or so (oops...)
Also, I thought it interesting that it seems the wireless Qi charger is on the same circuit as the interior lights, as that is currently out too (unless I managed to short something else in the process of pulling the fuse)
-
@cazlar so T10 is the one to go for the 2 lights on the roof? Can you send me the link, I tried to look above yet with so many links it is confusing.
I got a PD2 and I am thinking of LED the roof light so it not yellow anymore when i open the door :)
-
The one I ended up with for the T10 was this one: :link: 4Pcs 5630 LED SMD Interior Light T10 W5W Reading Lamp CanBus Error Free MA1308 4894663104788 | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232863757252)
May be able to get a touch cheaper from other ebay stores but my earlier order from HK never arrived so I went with one with local stock to get quicker.
That's for the double-light in between driver and passenger in my car without sunroof.
I don't think you have the light behind it that I also have (i.e. centre light between the 2 rows) due to your sunroof. That one is the festoon shaped bulb.

I would like to do the LED conversion as well, so thanks for that link.
Do you find they are bright enough ?
I was unsure whether there was a festoon in there or a T10.
Did you have any problem removing the lens on the map light, I had a bit of a tug the on it the other day but chickened out when it didn't want to let go. :scared:
-
You may be able to get brighter LEDs but yeah those were bright enough.
For removing, you want a small screwdriver and be slow/gentle but also firm when needed - they don't just pop out super easily.
The book kind of shows doing it from the door side away from where it pivots - I tried to do first one like that but I'd say maybe better to do from the "back of the car" side (one tab where it pivots, one on the part that moves). If that makes sense...
-
Gotcha, I'll order the lamps tonight and have another go., Thanks.
-
Yeah I'll order them tonight as well :D
-
I highly recommend these T10's :link: 4X WHITE T10 7020 SMD 10 LED W5W WEDGE TAIL SIDE CAR LIGHTS TURN PARKER BULB | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4X-WHITE-T10-7020-SMD-10-LED-W5W-WEDGE-TAIL-SIDE-CAR-LIGHTS-TURN-PARKER-BULB/222656138025?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649)
They are very bright and the base shape gives a far better/stable fitment than the circuit board type base.

Yo @CraigB
Thanks mate, Is the 2 rear lamps - one on top of each rear seat near the handle use the same type T10 as well?

If those are LED anyway is there any need to upgrade them, or are they not bright enough?

They are yellow - I dislike yellow light, it put me to sleep.

Ah yes, I guess they had to colour match them to the front map lights.
I notice that the manual says to have the Hyundai dealer replace them so it may not be an easy task.

It is a sad day indeed if we require an electrician to replace a light bulb :( Why do they have to designed it so :)

Hi guys
i tried following the manual to remove the light cover, yet too afraid I will break something if using force. Could not pry it following the manual instruction. I did manage to have some success from the door side as drawn with red arrow. Yet it still wouldn't come off.
(https://image.ibb.co/iF7G8e/Capture.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/)
Any tips on how to remove this thing without breaking it?

I think I'll wait until the lamps I ordered from ebay turn up before I tackle it though.

Where did you ordered from? I bought mine from that link CraigB mentioned previously and mine came through a couple of days ago.
-
I ordered the ones mentioned in posting #25 (cazlar) in this thread.
I probably would have got the ones that CraigB posted instead had I noticed in time but my order was already in process by then.
I'm sure anything will be an improvement on the dull incandescents in there at the moment.
-
@CraigB - Woot, got the car back from the rear bumper replacement. Today I received the trim tools, so I replace them T10 as per your recommendation, now I have white !!! Thanks CraigB
Now need to order the festoon size for the vanity shade light. Any recommendation?

Put the LED in the driver side, beautiful light up white - Did the same on passenger side, all dark - What the hell. Checked everything still dark.
Dammit blown a fuse :P Grab a replacement spare from the engine fuse box and got everything going again. All lights are white now.
The last two @ the rear next to the roof handle I have no idea what to do with them. Cant seem to find a way to remove the cover.
Time for more research
-
You might be able to suss out the rear two by removing the handles then pull the rubber door seal back far enough which should allow access into the headlining and you can drop the whole light fixture.

Word from Tim the master Hyundai tech on one of the facebook groups (he doesn't come here anymore) :Pout: is that he thinks they may be permanent yellow LEDs.. :crazy1:
-
Dazzler - are you still in contact with Tim on FB? can you ask him if he knows of replacement unit to make it white? Does Hyundai have such a thing?

He has an SR as well which his wife drives. He isn't sure at this stage. I just noticed he made a comment that he was pretty sure they were yellow wired in LED's.
I doubt there is a white option available but i cant imagine it would be very hard to solder in a white LED in place of the yellow one if you or a mate are handy with a soldering iron. Get a suitable led from Jaycar or similar)
If I see or hear any more about those lights I will let you know.
-
Thanks for all the info in this topic, I've been reading the forum for a few weeks since I bought my i30 :)... now I have the leds everywhere except back seats and reverse lights.
As for the back seats, is there any news? I don't quite like how it looks with both white/yellow... I'm even considering going back full yellow :(. I've tried to remove the little plastic without success. I would change the led if I can ever remove it. I'm good with the electrical part but not so much removing plastic without breaking anything!
Has anyone also upgraded the reverse lights? is it worth the trouble?

LED reverse lights make a huge difference to the rear vision, highly recommended :goodjob2:

As Craig said, good LED reversing lights make a huge difference especially with rear view camera at night. So much better than the filament bulbs, you can actually see what is behind you without using the force :snigger: or missus giving vague gap instructions from outside the car :crazy1:

Looking at the live shots the first bulbs 2000Lm ( 1000Lm per bulb ) they look less bright than the current 500 to 600Lm bulbs I’m using at the moment, if they actually were that bright I would also be concerned with melting the socket
The other bulbs won’t fit, they may have the T15 w16w adaptor but how do you expect to mount them :undecided:

Reasonable price :goodjob2: a little less bright (500Lm per bulb) than the others suggested though as it's using three to four year old LED tech.

Wow! I didn't expect such excitement about reverse LEDs :D
I think I'll order the ones CraigB has at the moment, not keen on spending more than 15 bucks on this as I don't reverse that much at night.
I've found this one :link: NEW T15 921 W16W Wedge Super White 24 SMD 2835 LED Backup Reverse Light | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-T15-921-W16W-Wedge-Super-White-24-SMD-2835-LED-Backup-Reverse-Light/163344271354) which has the same specs as the more expensive ones, I might go for them and let you know. If they are bad they'll go to the Getz instead :)
-
You wont be disappointed
Bought, now the wait :) I've been following @CraigB recommendation from shampoo to drying towels, and now LED, been good so far - so I'll continue to stick to his recommendation :victory: :goodjob2:

That was quick :goodjob2: which ones did you get, the type I’m currently using or the new generation? I might order some of the new gen type to test and see how they compare :)
Have you done the indicators yet

I haven't test it out yet, will do in a few mins when I am taking the family out for ice cream.
Regarding to indicators - That seem to require more effort to remove and replace them, also the LED have to be yellow right? Any recommendation? :P
Update: Oh wow, reverse camera at night is no longer grainy. I should have done this sooner.

They’re extremely bright though no resistors are required with these, crustycottage amd myself are running these and love em :)
I've noticed they now have an option for 750 lumen bulbs which are currently out of stock ( 10 days till re-stocked ), they might be a better option as the 1500 lumen bulbs are super bright.

I too got the LED backup lights recommended by CraigB. I had no trouble replacing them in the current model SR but with the daughters GD SR I can't get the old ones out. The holder goes loose when I turn it but will not pull out from the light assembly. I did the same on the new car and it simply pulled out. Is there something different in the 2 models? By the way CraigB your recommendation for these lights was spot on. They are great!! :happydance: :happydance:

Just have to wiggle them around a bit to get them out on the GD, if they're going to be really stubborn you might have to remove the light to do it.

As Craig stated they plug straight ini and are superbright. other road users will definitely see you indicating so no worries there.

Thanks CraigB, I just wasn't sure of how much I could pull on the globe holders. These do really make a difference especially on the reversing camera at night. Would never thought of changing globes if I hadn't seen it on this forum. Great place for help. Cheers all :) :)

You're welcome :goodjob2:
Yes they make a huge difference, the comparable differences between the two bulb types are so dramatic that car companies should be fitting these for safety standards, plus it clears up the grainy rear camera issues :)

Thought I'd upload a couple of photos to show the quality of the new generation LED reverse lights.
Not that the previous were poor at 500Lm but the new one's are a little brighter at 600Lm with fewer LED chips, they also make use of reflection technology which the last generation didn't have.
Nice and bright

Clarity of revision cam which also shows how the reverse lights illuminate the houses across the road.

Impressive. Wish the PD camera was that clear at night. Even with the LED reverse light, still quite grainy. :Pout:

It seem quite clear when I used that on my PD2 - did you get the new LED CraigB suggested bro?

Mine are the earlier ones I think. It helped a lot, but still quite grainy. Nothing like the picture Craig posted.
-
I put the globes CraigB suggested into both my daughters GD and my PD and the camera in both is like his picture shows, not grainy. I live in a retirement village and the lights light up the house across the road. Really you cannot compare to old globes. These should be standard. Excuse the pun but the led globes are brilliant.

I changed the interior festoon globes to LED a little while ago. What I found was the metal section of the standard festoons globes fitted by Hyundai were a little shorter than a standard 31mm globe ( globe overall about 29mm) and also the 2 u shaped contacts holding the globes in where a little closer together. When fitting the new LED 31mm globes the heatsink on the back of the globes shorted on the U shaped retainers. Easily fixed with a little pressure on the retainers to spread them a little further apart. Problem solved. Same with the light in the boot. Also it did not matter what polarity you put the LED's in, they worked in both directions. The new LEDs where the same ones in the link CraigB provided. Big difference in light output and no longer a yellowish colour , now a bright white.
-
Thanks for the links Craig - I have just ordered the reversing LED's, 750 Lumen Indicators and a couple of Festoon's from Classic Car Led's. Cant wait to see the improvement these make - especially to the reverse camera at night :happydance:

You're welcome, you'll be amazed with the difference of the reverse bulbs, the 750 lumen indicators are still on the limit of to bright though much better than my previous 1500 lumens on the fellow drivers eyes behind me at the lights :)

Hey mate, the amber lights you mentioned in the link above is now out of stock and wont be stocking. They have mentioned that the new gen is being released at the end of this month.....
Again, can you recommend which bulbs that works best for the internal lights and number plates etc?

Thanks heaps for these links, I'll order them soon and upgrade these lights. I already noticed the grainy part of the reverse camera during night time so this bright light should resolve the issue.

What a day! I finally managed to upgrade the lights to these LEDs. Will check them out when it is night-fall. Only missing is the reverse lights I will need to order, haha

B-b-but the helpful guides...?
Ahem, there isnt much to say in regard to the LED replacement, it just pretty much open and swap so not much to tell. Regarding to the LED type, listen to CraigB - he gave me the link b4.

Have added the reverse lights sometime last week - it was so bright and resolved the grainy part of the reverse camera! So now, awaiting for the blinkers to become available...

Have you try to dim down the screen brightness? I cannot seem to reduce the brightness of the screen while it on reverse.

I’ll have to give that a try?

I think Blazorax is confusing the bulbs, the reverse bulbs used are 600Lm - indicators are 1500Lm or the optional 750Lm.

I would think those bulbs are not suitable due to the light doesn't replicate the normal light throw of a standard bulb, they have side lighting but nothing from the top which is more important.

I understand that but the bulb will still not replicate properly because it's only relying on the reflected light as opposed to a bulb design that displays in all directions and uses the reflector.

Another vote for the classic car LED indicator, plug straight in, no hyperflash and good quality. I tried some brake tail light LEDs from ES Lighting in the missus's Getz, but they are toast, and had to put the filament bulbs back in

OK .. so I've decided to order the below LED globes (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1PCS-T20-LED-7440-W21W-4014-105SMD-Canbus-No-Hyperflash-1156-BA15S-P21W-LED-PY21W-BAU15S/33003970368.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.24d74c4dfovd2s) [for the Hyundai and the Mazda] to "R&D" them to see if they're okay.

I agree with @CraigB that they should have LED's in every which way possible to get the best result .. They're cheap, hopefully there's no flicker..

They look the same as the first classic car led indicators I used, they’re good but extremely bright which is why I changed to the second generation bulbs at 700lm.

The combination DRL/blinker 'switchback' set that I got for Firty are like these:

From the set of images included on the site you can see that they cover very well both side illumination (three facets) and head-on, so anything of that style will work really well - it does for me! :victory:

@DeeTee @Blazorax Did you guys or anyone else ever find out if the interior bulbs near the rear handles can be replaced? Or @Dazzler did that FB guy ever find out if they are permanent yellow?
-
I still have it yellow on mine :) ... cannot find a white one.
-
Mmmm looks like maybe it's not straight forward since they are similar to this....

LED lamps do not have replaceable bulbs." - :link: License Plate Light Bulb Replacement; Interior Light Bulb Replacement - Hyundai Elantra GT 2018 Owner's Manual [Page 437] (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1368500/Hyundai-Elantra-Gt-2018.html?page=437#manual)

I'll ask him through Messenger. By coincidence I need to ask him something else. One side of my DRL's on the SR has stopped working and I wondered if it could just be a globe or a fuse before I take it in for a warranty fix. He is a Hyundai Master Technician.

Cool thanks. My local dealer had a look into it for me and just got back to me... he said this - "Looks like a led bulb soldered into the board."

Tim hasn't had a chance to confirm (he forgot) but that was definitely what he suspected.

LEDs can be de-soldered and replaced if the specs are known.
-
Thanks. Yeah I could do it but don't want to void warranty at this stage....

In case anyone is interested, my dealer sent me these photos...

Can somebody tell me which kit I need for upgrading to LED interior lights on my GD? I was looking at this (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/23Pcs-LED-Car-Inside-Light-Dome-Map-Trunk-License-Plate-Lamp-Interior-Bulb-Kit/164173198940?var=463803608818). The seller wasn't helpful.
I noticed that the red lights on the bottom of both front doors never light up. Are my bulbs gone or are they just reflectors?

The seller probably wasn't much help as you were looking at an led kit for an Alfa :snigger: Most if not all of the GD interior bulbs are 31mm, I'd check them first or look at your vehicle manual for the specs/amount required.
Inside lower doors are just reflectors.
