Title: RAM air? would it be worthwhile?
Post by: tr3mor on May 04, 2014, 15:09:37
since the first time I popped the bonnet, aka hood, i've noticed these little nostrils coming out into that little grill.. any ever consider or try or even weigh out the benefits/losses of converting the hood and air intake system to take full on beastly nostrils? like say... the old camaro/trans am craziness? :)

not sure it would suit the look of the car, but eh, sometimes performance comes before appearance right?  :)

Air intakes in the bonnet can look pretty neat  :goodjob:

I put one on my old i30 hatch (with photoshop) You were probably thinking more like vents though, I'm guessing!  :D

Modifying the air intake wont really increase the performance with these cars. But doesn't mean it doesn't look cool

Something like these ram intakes would definitely make the i30 look outstanding and attract attention.

so I guess that is a yes others have thought of it but like myself, has not attempted it as of yet.
not sure about in the rest of the world, but here are a couple of the usual suspects with ram air..

I am kinda thinking something similar to.. .

mounted off center towards the drivers side right above there air cleaner
more like ...

my photoshop/gimp skills are lacking, but you get the idea.

unfortunately, I have no experience with air intake systems, that don't seem to be my biggest flaw in my design plan, how does one keep snow and ice from building up there in the winter?

Ram air is really effective at supersonic speeds, below that, it's mainly style and cosmetics.

If you really want an effective system, you would need a wind tunnel to determine where on the front of the car, the highest pressure build up is. This would be the starting point for development. The type of scoop you have provided looks inefficient and likely to create swirl and could actually reduce performance. When it comes to airflow, you should think aeronautical, no corners or sharp 90 degree angles and lots of unobstructed frontal area.

I agree with Phil.  It is not just a matter of putting a hole in the bonnet/hood, this may make things worse.  For example, in my old V8 Commondoor, it had a Over The Radiator Cold Air Intake (OTRCAI), which, as the name implies, took air from the front and top of the radiator (i.e. cool air) instead of the wheel well (i.e. hot engine bay).  This was researched by many firms to ensure the best position for it.  It shared cooling air for the radiator.

I don't think it is really an issue in the i30, as it isn't really considered a performance machine, particularly the diesel.  But, it is fun to drive!!

interesting thoughts, and now you have me wondering if the Elantra Touring and the i30's have the same air intake?
the touring takes air right above the rad :) or at least mine does, under bonnet but two miniature nostrils there :)

IF it is different, I may just have to get a couple photos posted here ;)
but I do agree, REALLY fun car to drive, would like her a little stiffer for AutoCross, but I am not doing that often enough to get into those mods.

I have Ram air intake on my commodore, but that is a V6 Stroker, chipped and a few other mods, the RAM air in this case makes a difference,I would like to see, more air intake area on the I30,but not sure it would make that much difference to these already Oh! so power packed cars  :whistler:

Maybe a bit of matt black vinyl wrap on the nose panel will give the desired wide mouth deep throat  effect. :whistler:

kinda the idea, the small scoop idea was over the top of the air filter but that would have to be flipped and like someone else said, redesigned.

here is the Canadian (i assume North American) Elantra Touring air intake.

Pretty sure that is the same worldwide. The narrow aperture and the long housing would cause a lot of drag, still, I prefer to think that the designer's wouldn't create an inefficient airway, just for aesthetics.

I would like to think so as well :) but still wonder if it is as efficient as possible? :)
but probably would be 0-little gain :(
