Almost four in 10 drivers don't know how to read a traditional map, according to new research by sat-nav manufacturer Garmin.

A study of 2,000 Britons revealed that 39% admit to not knowing what they're doing with old-fashioned navigation, but the true figure could well be higher than that when taking into account those who believe they can read a map but have either never tried or never proved it.

A worrying 16% say that they are "heavily reliant" on sat-nav in their cars in order to get anywhere - even to places they regularly visit.

Elsewhere in the study, 40% refuse to admit when they are lost, for fear of embarrassment in front of other people in the car. Almost three in 10 (29%) refuse to stop or ask for directions no matter how lost they get.

One third (33%) said that they regularly found themselves in arguments with their significant others over directions, while women were twice as likely to be preoccupied with grooming themselves, frequently taking their eyes off the road in the process.

Map reading over the open ocean isn't that hard.  You keep the blue stuff on the left, the blue stuff on the right, go straight ahead for two hours, and then the rig appears straight in front of you.  Turn around, go home.

I am never ever lost, just temporaryly misplaced. :goodjob2:
When I finally get bored or low on fuel,I'll then ask for assistance. :-[
I prefer a folded paper map to a Nav Bitch for a long journey, good for planning. :happydance:
I prefer a UBD for navigating the metro area's,but will use the nav bitch in strange cities I don't know. :D
I never argue with my other significant other because she is always right   :scared:(unless she questions or queries my driving ability) :TutTut:

And I most certainly DO NOT ask my significant other to read the UBD,I just can't stand the continual rotating circle of the book every corner we turn  :Dunno:

In all seriousness, I actually found that the Boy Scouts taught me a lot about reading maps, particularly topographic maps.  This was then enhanced when I joined the military and continued my learning of basic bush skills.  The final part came with me doing map reading at 250 ft above the ground, travelling at 400 km/h.  If you don't know how to read maps there, then you will get lost, and very quickly (pun intended).

Actually it was Boy Scouts, Air Force, Navy.  I just kept improving!  The only thing missing was I didn't start as an Altar Boy.

The army survey maps we used in rallying back when navigators navigatored, were great.
Mostly 1:250,000 but for some events in areas with a lot of roads, 1:50,000 (IIRC). Great fun, especially with topographical features all shown as well. Think we also used 1:100,000 series. All gone now of course, but I must admit Google maps is pretty useful.
