Welcome "the madman" .. Thanks for that info  :goodjob:

Most have found just moving the tether strap to a different position fixes the problem... :undecided:

My Fuel Door/ Cap started doing the same.
Took it into the dealership armed with the TSB
They claimed the TSB was "not relevant in Australia" and they "don't fix it that way anymore"

After about 15min the service manager returned the keys and claimed it was fixed.
When I asked what they did to fix it, the service manager admitted they re-bent the spring.
I asked what would happen when the spring looses tension again and he said to bring it back.

I have found some foam similar to what is shown in the TSB and it will become a "customer service" fix where the customer does the service and fixes it themself.

Not overly happy.

This started happening to me recently.  Luckily I have the car booked in for it's 45000km service next week (down here I will average about 45000km a year now).  I keep forgetting to write it down and let them know because I don't have to fill the car very often.  In the meantime, I will try a few of the tips mentioned in this thread and let you all know how it goes.

Our GT (I30) does not have a lever to lift for the gas cap door.
All you do is just push on the door and it opens. I was concerned about possible theft from the tank, or something being put in, but it will not open if the doors are all locked.
Maybe changed because of all the problems that are mentioned here??

"Central locking" of the fuel cap is becoming more common (not a bad idea) The door sticking is only caused by the cap tether getting caught in an "awkward" position. So, in theory the problem could still occur on your car if the cap has a permanent tether cable to stop you losing the cap  :undecided:

I'm not convinced this is the only cause, in fact I think the dress of the tether only contributes to the real problem which appears to be insufficient spring strength and/or binding hinge.

That's my observation anyway. I can put the tether in any position but the door remains closed but released such that a fingernail will open it. I've not bothered to look too hard for a fix.

That is interesting Trish's only did it once and I moved the tether and it was fine  :undecided:

Although I never had a problem with the door opening on my previous i30 - I have lost count the number of times I have got out, walked round to the pump, lifted the pump nozzle, turned round to fill and found I had forgotten to pull the lever to open the door.

That's why I prefer the arrangement of the new car.

I had the car (I still haven't named it yet) in for it's (don't know if it is a male or female yet) 45,000 km service last week.  I mentioned the fuel cap sticking.  The service consultant smiled and nodded and said it was a common fault and that the spring would need re-tensioning.  I only needed to fill up today, and wouldn't you know it, the lever worked as advertised!!  Woohoo!!

Maybe if you can remind us what you have and give us some of its characteristics, we may be able to help you form an opinion as to what you should call it?

Yes, his car, Alan, his car.
With his name being what it is, maybe he could call it "Chubby."
He'd be able to pull Chubby out of the garage and take him for a run.
FatBoy & Chubby has a ring to it.
