Title: STEERING RACK NOT CENTRED? - i30 FD 2010
Post by: pshluna on January 29, 2024, 23:11:03
Hi and thanks for any advice or assistance. My first post here !! Recently purchased i30 FD 5door hatch.
Steering wheel will turn 1 3/4 to left and 1 1/4 to right. Not enough steering travel to right / too much to left - causes tyre scrub at full lock left.
Vehicle drives great. Wheel sits centred and true. Steering feels good. Appears the steering rack has been out at some stage.
No evidence of prior accident. Tie rods threaded uneven to get alignment good.
Questions : could it be as simple as spline on steering rack not centred? Are they a master spline or not?
Could it be that alignment needs to be redone and steering wheel re-centred? Is the steering wheel spline a master spline?
I'm trying to understand what it could possibly be, clearly someone messed up with the install of a rack??
Thoughts and advice much appreciated thanks.

I guess the main thing to consider here. Firstly, why has someone done that to the steering adjustment?
Could that mean there's a serious body / subframe problem?

I think I'd start by getting it on an alignment machine with someone who knows what they're doing. Hopefully it's as simple as doing a proper alignment.
If there's an issue with that, then possibly some serious body twisting.

Thank you. Have had up on hoist, looks great from underneath & as mentioned no evidence of crash damage. I feel it could be something simple, hopefully anyway. Really need the spline questions answered. I'll need to seek another knowledgeable alignment specialist to check. Appreciate the thoughts
