Folks

This month the Children's Medical Research Institute is raising funds for kids cancer. As part of their fund raising, I have joined the Great Cycle Challenge. So far it hasn't been much of a challenge but the fund raising hasn't been awesome either. So for those of you who want to assist, here's the deal.

I've set a modest fund raising target. If the half way mark is met by Saturday the 25th, on the 26th I'll do 50km in one go. If the target is exceeded, I'll do 100km and if its doubled, I'll ride up Mt Mee and back.

Now the challenge bit. The course for the 50 and 100 is a 10km circuit with plenty of hills and the target times are 2 hours for 50 and 4 hours for 100. The ride up Mt Mee is an all day thing. Its only about 130km for the round trip but it is up a mountain so its hard work.

Whatever happens I am sure will make for a good laugh.

How to help:

  • All donations go to a worthy cause and are tax deductible. On the link below there's a donate button for those that are kind enough to offer support in that way.
  • Spread the word. You never know, there might be someone else out there who wants to help or is just curious to see if a fat bloke can go round the block a few times or even make up the mountain. I'm curious about that too.

Check it out here: :link: Great Cycle Challenge - Riders - Keith Heinrich

A final word about why I decided to give this a go. Cancer is not good in a big way. I've seen it in action a few times now and whether the person with it survives or not, its a grim situation. With kids and their families, its much worse I think. This is a small thing I can do to help those who are helping those with cancer. I would be grateful for any support.

A quick update. First thing, I am very grateful for the support here, its been awesome.

So far 366km covered so not far to go to make the distance target. Now, the week ahead, I'm going to have a crack at doing 50km anyway on Sunday irrespective. I may go further if I am still up for it. Difficult to know how that's going to work out since there's hills and right now, they are killing me.

Stay tuned to see what happens.

As the final week approaches, I am pleased to report the distance target has been reached today. I expect it will be approaching 600km by this time next week, more if the legs keep functioning.

You can keep track of the activity here: :link: Great Cycle Challenge - Riders - Keith Heinrich and remember its not too late to sponsor me if you wish. Click the link if you want to support me.

This Sunday we shall see how fast I can cover 50km. The course looks a bit like this:

That's right, its somehow mostly uphill with only a few very short descents. Its going to be tough. Anyone care to guess a time in which I might cover the distance?

Its is well and truly done in 1:47:30 for the 50km and then I rode home so clearly I didn't go hard enough. ;)

Today I was watching HR zones and cadence only and keeping HR between 3 and 4 and cadence around 90. So watching the tacho, not the speedo. The results - consistent times on the splits which is good, max speed on each lap within a frag, average speed identical for the last 3 laps. All these things are signs of good progress.

40km split was 1:25 which is fantastic after only 3 months, especially on this course.

And naturally it got hotter and windier as well which made each lap successively more difficult. Arrived home in good shape and well pleased with the results.  :victory:

Many thanks again to you all for your support and generosity in leaping aboard and helping those in need. Truly appreciated.  :goodjob2: :goodjob:

Overall with your support and the combined efforts of everyone who rode and supported riders, it looks like $2M will be raised for this worthwhile cause. I think that's a remarkable outcome.

I have covered just over 700km now and that's enough. Legs are running out of ooomph today but as a result, I'm expecting another $70 or so from someone who decided to sponsor me per km which I thought was a bold move on their part.

Once again, thanks for all the support, it was gratifying and really shows what an awesome bunch you all are.
