Hi All

Have any of you guys had problems with flickiring lights when starting the car..

It's not at every start, or I've missed it because it's not allways dark, but sometimes the light goes up and down in strength. It's normally only for a few seconds after start, than it stabilises. My local dealer have never heard of it before.

Remember the sound on when watching the video.

Hmm. I would think it's the regulator in the alternator, but why only at start...

Take a look at the lights on the wall...

I start the car, the DRL turn on the headlights right away, and the light flickers.

Think I'll try and measure the voltage at the battery when the engine is running and accelerator is activated on/off

Check the voltage of the battery with the engine off too. My money would be on the battery.

My 2010 Crdi CW (42k) has been doing this since new. It probably only happens once a month and settles down after about 30 secs.  Lifting the idle up seems to help them settle too. I turn the lights on after the car has been started.
Of course, the dealer couldn't recreate the problem so solution there.  Vaguely related is the brake light bulbs that keep blowing - just about to replace the 4th.

This happened to my 2011 i30 CRDi after I left it for a week in the garage. The engine was very rough in idle as in the video. It lasted for a 20-30 seconds, then like nothing happened.

Voltage stabiliser if they still such a thing in the i30.
  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

I don't think it's the battery as this has happened for the 1,5 year I've got the car, and I've never had problems with lack of power from the battery.

There's been no flickering today...

My opinion is that there is something going on with the engine and not so much with the electricity. Namely, the idle is very rough.

The rough idle have never occurred before, so it's funny it just happens when I've the phone ready to record.

I don't think it is unnatural with this "sinus-curve" idle, that the light is unstable, but the flickering at start-up is not normal, I think.

I will try to measure the voltage in the weekend. Will try to record it if possible.

Our 2008 i30 is doing this often but only in cold months!

For about first 2-3 minutes of driving in cold weather.......but not allways.

Lights are flickering......and also ventilation...

We mention that problem on service....and they say that this is happening because diesel filter heater is engaging and disengaging to heat up diesel (oil)

For some strange reason the lights haven't done the flickering since I last posted about this.. :goodjob:

...but mine would do it even when the car was warm, after 30 mins driving.

Sorry, I don't believe this answer. If there is a heater, it would have to impose a huge load on the electrics to visibly affect lights & ventilation. When the engine is running, you have the battery & alternator at your disposal and they are designed to handle such loads.

I would check ALL earthing points on your vehicle for corrosion. If possible, remove and physically check the wire along its total length. Also, check the positive cables as well.

:whsaid: Systems are not designed to display such variation under normal load. The most common problem is definitely of the dry join and corrosion type.

Cool I didn`t think about that possibility.......I will check all the cables......and I will open all relays and clean their contacts with contact spray  :goodjob2:

I had similar problem on Lantra once......ventilation went ON and OFF  while driving......it was dirty relay contacts

The only time I can recall when lights flicked was when the alternator was on it way out.

I assume regulator on alternator! I will take alternator to service.
